Novice 8 Gold Highlights Women's Rowing at the Head of the Schuylkill

10.27.18 | Women's Rowing

PHILADELPHIA -- Racing in rainy conditions, the Temple women's rowing team closed out its fall season in successful fashion at the 2018 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.

Racing Highlights
> Temple grabbed gold in the novice eight race to highlight their last head racing event of the fall.
> The Owls' shined in all events, notching top 10 performances from eight of nine boats.

Quotable: Associate Head Coach Alyssa O'Donnell
> "I think we showed big improvements across the board from Navy Day, which was just two weeks ago, so that shows how hard we've been training."
> "Overall, today's results really show our depth as a team. We wanted to leave our competitors with a certain type of impression heading into the spring, and I think we did that today."

Championship Eights
> Temple's top boat had a solid performance, taking fifth place in the championship eight field.
> The Cherry and White had the fastest time in the field at the first and second checkpoints, before an unfortunate oar clash with a competitor not yielding slowed Temple's progress.
> Still, the Owls clocked in at 13:48.911 in the field of 20 competitors.

Club Eights
> Two top 10 finishes and a third in the top half of the field showed Temple's depth in the club eight category.
> Temple's "A" boat took fourth, just out of the medals, clocking in at 13:58.853.
> The "B" boat also finished in the top ten, placing eighth overall in 14:28.691.
> The Owls' third boat in the race finished 25th in 14:52.339, as 50 competitors raced in the event.

Championship Fours
> The Owls' varsity fours showed both strength and depth, as all three finished with top 10 performances.
> Temple's two fastest boats took sixth and seventh places, finishing in 15:42.221 and 15:44.831, respectively.
> The Cherry and White's third entry also shined, with a ninth place finish (15:50.637) in the field of 43.

Novices
> Led by the novice eight's gold medal, Temple's rookies had a solid day.
> The Owls' top freshman eight boat defeated a field of 29, to take first in a time of 14:31.653.
> The victory was the second of the fall season for the Owls, who finished undefeated in two races.
> Temple's other entry in the eights race, comprised of walk-ons, finished ninth in 16:00.367.

Up Next
> The Owls will return to competition in the spring, beginning with a scrimmage at Navy on March 6.
