Football to Host Blood Drive on November 12

PHILADELPHIA – On Monday, November 12, the Temple Owls Football Team, in concert with the American Red Cross, will host a blood drive. The event will take place at Edberg-Olson Hall (1001 W. Diamond Street, Philadelphia) from 11:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m.

The inspiration for the drive is Kane Ivers-Osthus, known as "El Diablo" to members of the team. Ivers-Osthus was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year. The 24-year old equipment manager was ill through summer training camp and was forced to go to the Temple University Hospital emergency room on August 31, the eve of Temple's season opener vs. Villanova. It was then that he was diagnosed with leukemia and was placed in to a medically induced coma so he could receive chemotherapy and other medical treatments.

After more than a month in the hospital, Ivers-Osthus was told that his cancer was in remission and he was transferred to a rehab center for physical therapy. However, he is just beginning his fight and needs all the love and support that we can give.  Ivers-Osthus has received over 70 blood transfusions and will continue to receive more over the course of his treatment. Philadelphia has a blood shortage and therefore much of his blood has been shipped in from the Midwest. Each blood donation can help save three lives.

To sign up for this blood drive please register online ASAP at http://www.redcrossblood.org. The sponsor code is "El Diablos Army "

The Melbourne Beach, Fla., native completed his undergrad degree at the University of Florida where he first worked with Temple head coach Geoff Collins. Everyone that knows Kane knows what an awesome and genuine person he is.  He always has a positive attitude and a smile on his face.  His hope is to return to his position with the team at Edberg-Olson Hall before the end of the season.

Kane has a long fight ahead of him and we want to help him and his family through this difficult time.
