PHILADELPHIA— Temple's men's and women's tennis teams will host the Temple Invite on Friday, Oct. 12 through Sunday, Oct. 14. The event will be held at the TU Pavilion and is the Owls' sole home competition of the fall.
The Owls
MEN
> Temple is led by head coach Steve Mauro, who is in his 13th year at the helm of the men's program.
> The Owls finished the 2018 spring season with a 13-9 overall record, going 1-2 in the American and 7-0 at home.
> The men return seven players from last year, including five upperclassmen. The team is heavy in experience this year, as it features no freshmen and the lone newcomer, Paolo Cucalon, is a junior transfer.
> Last time on the court, the men's team competed at Princeton's Farnsworth Invite. They had a strong showing, with both pairs of competitors, Alberto Caceres Casas/Mark Wallner and Paolo Cucalon/Uladzimir Dorash, finishing third in their respective draws.
WOMEN
> The Owls are led by head coach Steve Mauro, who is in his 11th year at the helm of the women's program.
> The squad wrapped up the 2018 spring season with a 10-8 overall record, going 2-1 in the American and 7-1 at home.
> Temple's team has a new look this year, as five of the nine student-athletes are fresh faces on the Owls' roster. The Owls return veterans Oyku Boz, Cecilia Castelli, Kristina Titova and Alice Patch.
> Last weekend, the women's squad played at the Penn Invite. The Owls notched a solid performance in the Cherry and White against formidable local competition.
From Coach Mauro
> "We're looking forward to playing this tournament at home," head coach Steve Mauro. "The guys have been traveling a lot, so it's great to play a home tournament. A couple teams did pretty well last year in their conferences, so we hope to do well. Based upon on our last performance at Princeton, I think the guys should have another good outing."
> "We're really happy to be hosting this event," said Mauro. "The women are coming off some very successful tournaments and I expect the same this weekend. Everyone has been playing well and we're looking to win all our flights against each team. We feel that we are a strong team and that's our expectation."
About the Temple Invite
> The women's team welcomes competitors from Mount St. Mary's, Morgan State and Villanova, while the men's side features Bucknell, Mount St. Mary's and Morgan State.
> The invite will have eight singles flights and four doubles flights.
> Warmups will begin one hour prior to the match.
> In the event of rain, the matches will be held at the Legacy Youth Tennis and Education
