Volleyball Falls to Tulsa on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to visiting Tulsa in the home final for the Owls. With the 25-17, 25-23, 25-16 loss, Temple falls to 7-22 (4-13 AAC), while Tulsa improved to 19-10 (11-6 AAC). After the match, the Owls honored the Temple Volleyball class of 2019 - Irem Asci, Iva Deak, Carla Guennewig, Mia Heirakuji, and Hannah Vandegrift.
Keys to the Match
> Tulsa's high powered offense hit .257, while recording eight blocks to hold Temple to just a .092 attack.
> Temple held a slim 54-53 edge in digs, but the Owls made 23 errors in the match accounting for the final score.
> Tulsa started strong winning the first set, and it looked as Temple would tie, with a late lead in the second.
> However, a final Tulsa surge gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage, swinging the momentum back.
> Tulsa closed out the sweep leading start to finish in the final frame.
Individual Highlights
> In her final match at McGonigle Hall, senior Mia Heirakuji racked up 20 digs to lead all players.
> On offense, the Owls were paced by seven kills each from senior Iva Deak, sophomore Katerina Papazoglou, and freshman Gem Grimshaw.
> Junior Dana Westfield added six kills, while senior Carla Guennewig led Temple with three blocks.
> Senior Hannah Vandegrift tallied 17 assists to lead the Owls, while freshman Tyler Lindgren added 13 with five digs.
> Rounding out the box score, Papazoglou picked up 11 digs, while classmate Averi Salvador added eight.
Set One: Tulsa 25, Temple 17
> Tulsa got off to a hot start, as hitting struggles plagued the Owls early.
> Leading 9-6, the Golden Hurricane pushed their advantage to 17-12 forcing a Temple timeout.
> The Owls battled back to get the match to 21-17, but Tulsa finished out the first set with a block and a kill.
Set Two: Tulsa 25, Temple 23
> Both teams held late leads, but in the end, Tulsa got the points it needed to go up, 2-0.
> Temple had a strong start, leading 12-7 after a Vandegrift ace.
> Tulsa battled back to tied at 15-15 and take a 19-17 lead.
> Temple trailed 21-18, but 4-0 Owls' run put the hosts up 22-21.
> Tied 22-22, Tulsa closed it out a pair of kills and a Temple attack error.
Set Three: Tulsa 25, Temple 16
> The Golden Hurricane closed out the sweep in the third.
> Tulsa scored the first four points of the third set, and pushed it to 11-3, forcing an early Temple TO.
> With Tulsa up 14-7, Temple used a 6-2 run to close the gap to 16-13.
> Tulsa rebounded with five unanswered points, however, pushing the lead to 21-13.
> The Owls made one last run, but couldn't cut into the deficit, as Tulsa finished out it 25-26.
