11.2.18 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - It's an early start to the season, in fact the earliest ever, for Temple men's basketball as the Owls host Philadelphia Big 5 rival La Salle at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6 (ESPN3 / 1210 AM WPHT). Temple is coming off a 17-16 campaign and an NIT first round appearance, while the Explorers went 13-19 last year and saw their season conclude in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

Scouting Temple
> The Owls' contest vs. La Salle is the first of four straight home games to begin the season.
> After being one of the last teams to start their season in 2017-18 on Nov. 16, the Owls are one of the first with their Nov. 6 tip-off this year. Temple's first home game a year ago was not until a full month later on Dec. 6.
> The 2018-19 season will be the 13th and final year at the helm for head coach Fran Dunphy. Taking the reins in 2019-20 will be current associate head coach Aaron McKie. Dunphy enters the season at 557-315 in his 29-year career, and has a 247-152 record in his 12 seasons with the Owls.
> Temple concluded its 2017-18 season in the NIT First Round, losing to eventual champion Penn State 63-57.
> Junior guard Quinton Rose was named to the Preseason AAC First Team. He led Temple and ranked seventh in the AAC with 14.9 points per game last year, reaching double figures in scoring in 12 of the last 13 games and scoring 20 or more points in nine games as a sophomore.
> As a team, the Owls were picked to finish sixth of 12 teams in the AAC Coaches Preseason Poll after finishing seventh last season.
> Senior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. has scored 946 career points, needing just 54 more to become the 53rd player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. Rose is also eyeing the 1,000-point mark, currently with 815 career points.
> The Owls notched their 1,900th program win with a 90-73 defeat of ECU on Feb. 7, 2018, led by Rose with 23 points.
> Last season was the 11th in a row in which Temple defeated a Top 25 program, beating #16/16 Wichita State in overtime at home, 81-79 on Feb. 1.

Scouting La Salle
> Last year's Explorers finished 13-19 overall and lost in the A-10 Tournament First Round. La Salle has been picked to finish 12th of the 14 A-10 teams in the league's preseason poll.
> Redshirt junior guard Pookie Powell, who was granted a waiver by the NCAA to be eligible for competition this year, averaged 16.9 points and 4.3 assists per game in 2017-18 and was named to the 2018 A-10 Preseason Second Team.
> La Salle is under the direction of first-year head coach Ashley Howard, who spent the past five years as an assistant coach at defending national champ Villanova. Howard is a 2004 graduate of Drexel.

Series History vs. La Salle
> Temple and La Salle are meeting for the 119th time, with the Owls holding a strong, 76-42 advantage in the series.
> The Owls had won three straight prior to last year's meeting, an 87-83 win for the Explorers on their home court.
> In 2016-17, Temple won 97-92 in overtime at the Liacouras Center.
> Prior to last year, La Salle's only win in 12 meetings had come in the 2013-14 when the Explorers earned a 74-68 victory on Jan. 18, 2014 to break an eight-game losing streak against Temple.
> The Owls have won 19 of the last 24 meetings, including eight straight from 2010-2013.
> Temple head coach Fran Dunphy, a 1970 La Salle grad, is 28-8 against his alma mater (15-4 while at Temple).
