Men's Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision Versus No. 20 UConn in AAC Quarterfinals
11.6.18 | Men's Soccer
How it Happened
> The Huskies put the offensive pressure on early, getting the first opportunity of the game in the 6th minute of action. UConn found leading scorer Abdou Mbacke Thiam inside of the Temple 18-yard box for what looked like a clear opportunity, but sophomore Tyler Gainer was there to make the defensive play and thwart the opportunity.
> Amidst a possession battle throughout the first half, Temple found the back of the net first in the 25th minute of action. Senior Belal Mohamed dribbled the ball up the right flank, ripped a shot from the right side of the box and caught a deflection off of a UConn defender to secure the first goal of the match, his second of the year.
> The Owls nearly extended their lead to two in the 33rd minute when Leandros Lillis sent a cross rocketing towards the penalty spot from the left corner. He found the head of freshman Jalen Campbell, who sent it spiraling towards net but was stopped by the cross bar.
> The Huskies found the equalizer in the 40th minute, when UConn's Cole Venner drove towards the left side of net, slotting one towards the near post and catching a deflection to even the field.
> UConn struck again in the 69th minute, when Mbacke Thiam sent the ball in towards Dayonn Harris, who volleyed it on frame and capitalized for his fifth goal of the season. The Huskies found the insurance goal five minutes later off the boot of Cole Venner, assisted by Mbacke Thiam.
Game Notes
> Tonight's game marked the first time all season that the Owls fell by a two goal margin. The defensive unit of Nick Sarver, Zach Brown, Pierre Cayet and Tyler Gainer along with goalkeeper Simon Lefebvre played with heart tonight, throwing their bodies in front of everything that came their way and thwarting multiple chances created by the talented UConn offense.
> The squad never let down and continued to put the pressure on the Huskies until the final whistle. In the midfield, senior Hermann Doerner, junior Lukas Fernandes, Mohamed and freshman Andres Charles-Barrera battled a physical Husky offensive unit all over the pitch in a game that saw 21 fouls and two yellow cards.
> Temple's front line of Elias Hellgren Villegas, Justin Hahn, Jalen Campbell and Lillis continuously put the Owls in dangerous territory to score, but the nationally ranked UConn squad consisting of the conference defensive player of the year held tough.
> The tournament game was the first the Owls played under head coach Brian Rowland. Temple completed their season with a record of 5-10-4, a mark not descriptive of talent this newly formed Temple squad possesses.
Thank you to seniors Jamie Pick, Aaron Laranetto, Belal Mohamed, Hermann Doerner, Jordan Wix Rauch and Robin Goetz for your contributions to the Temple program over the past four years. You will be missed!
