Men's Basketball Hosts Detroit Mercy on Friday in GotPrint.com Legends Classic

PHILADELPHIA - In the second of four straight home games to open the season, Temple will host Detroit Mercy in its first game of the GotPrint.com Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper (ESPN3 / 1210 AM WPHT). The Owls (1-0) are coming off a Big 5 win over La Salle, while the Titans (0-1) lost their opener at Western Michigan.

Scouting Temple
> Temple is making its first-ever appearance in the Legends Classic, now in its 12th year. The legend who will be honored at Friday's game is Owl great Mark Macon (1987-91), an All-American and Hall of Fame inductee who is Temple's all-time scoring leader with 2,609 career points. 
> The Owls opened the season with a Philadelphia Big 5 win over La Salle, 75-67. Junior Quinton Rose led Temple with 15 points, while sophomore Nate Pierre-Louis notched his first career double-double with 13 rebounds to go with 14 points. Also finishing with impressive numbers was senior Shizz Alston, Jr. with 13 points and a game-high eight assists.
> After being one of the last teams to start their season in 2017-18 on Nov. 16, the Owls were one of the first with their Nov. 6 tip-off this year. Temple's first home game a year ago was not until a full month later on Dec. 6. The team's start date this year was in fact the earliest ever in the history of the program.
> The 2018-19 season is the 13th and final year at the helm for head coach Fran Dunphy. Taking the reins in 2019-20 will be current associate head coach Aaron McKie. Dunphy has an overall record of 558-315 in his 29+ year career, and has a 248-152 record in his 12+ seasons with the Owls.
> Rose was named to the 2018 Preseason AAC First Team. He led Temple and ranked seventh in the AAC with 14.9 points per game last year, scoring 20 or more points in nine games as a sophomore.  
> As a team, the Owls were picked to finish sixth of 12 teams in the AAC Coaches Preseason Poll after finishing seventh last season.

Scouting Detroit Mercy
> The Titans lost in a high-scoring season opener at Western Michigan, 89-76, despite a 32-point effort from freshman Antoine Davis.
> Detroit Mercy is under the leadership of first-year head coach Mike Davis, who has 18 years of head coaching experience and an overall record of 352-242 with 14 postseason trips and nine appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
> Of the 17 players on the Titans' roster, 13 are new in 2018-19. That's tied for the most in the nation with Tennessee Chattanooga and Duquesne.
> Last season, Detroit Mercy went 8-24 overall and lost in the opening round of the Horizon League Tournament.

Series History vs. Detroit Mercy
> Temple and Detroit Mercy are meeting for just the third time, having each won a game in the series.
> The Owls bested the Titans in the most recent contest, winning 83-78 in the Chevrolet Gotham Classic at the Liacouras Center on Feb. 13, 2013.
> The first and only other meeting was on Dec. 28, 1968 and the 11th-ranked Titans won 87-76 at Temple.
> Mike Davis, head coach of the Titans, is 1-2 all-time against Temple. He won against the Owls as the head coach at Texas Southern, but went 0-2 against Temple as head coach at Indiana.
> Temple head coach Fran Dunphy was at the helm for the Owls' win in 2013, but went 0-1 against Detroit during his years at Penn.
