Women's Basketball Hosts La Salle in Big 5 Battle on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team will play at McGonigle Hall for just the third time this season, hosting Philadelphia Big 5 rival La Salle on Sunday. The Owls and Explorers will tip-off at 2:00 p.m.

PROMOTIONS
> Parent-Child Lay-Ups: All kids 6th grade and under are invited to La Salle and ECU and Cincinnati can come on the court after the game with a guardian to make a layup
> Post-Game Autographs: All fans are invited to a post-game autograph session with the Temple Owls on the main concourse. This is your chance to meet and greet the women's basketball team.

THE OWLS
> Temple is 3-7 overall, playing eight of 10 games so far this season away from McGonigle Hall.
> Sophomore Mia Davis leads Temple on both ends of the floor, averaging 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, also shooting a team and conference high 57.1% (12-21) from three point range.
> Graduate student Alliya Butts is second on the team in scoring, with 16.4 points per game, while leading the Owls with averages of 4.2 assists and 2.4 steals per outing.
> Sophomore Desiree Oliver (6.3 ppg) and freshman Marissa Mackins (6.2 ppg) also aid the Temple offense.
> Sophomore Emani Mayo (4.6 ppg) rounds out the season box score.
> As a team, the Owls are shooting 38.4% from the field and 27.7% from long range.

LAST TIME OUT: #25 South Carolina 88, Temple 60
> A huge third quarter from #25 South Carolina lifted the Gamecocks to an 88-60 victory over Temple. 
> The Owls trailed by just nine at the break, before the hosts outscored Temple, 27-6, including a 21-1 run to put things away.
> Temple turned the ball over just eight times in the game, while forcing 15 turnovers from South Carolina, as the Gamecocks hot shooting provided the difference.
> Shantay Taylor shined with career highs of 14 points and three steals, tying a career best with nine rebounds.
> Alliya Butts led the Owls with 19 points and four assists.

SCOUTING LA SALLE
> After an 0-8 start to the season, La Salle has won three out of their last five games to enter Sunday's clash at 3-10.
> La Salle has eight players contributing between 5.3 and 8.9 points per game, with Deja King at the top of the offensive list while also dishing out 2.5 assists per game.
> Michelle Nicholls' 8.1 points per game include a team-best 17 threes.
> Shalina Miller adds 7.4 points and a team-high 5.9 rebounds per game.
> As a team, the Explorers shoot 31% from the field and 23.7% from three point range.
> La Salle is led by Mountain MacGillivray, a Temple graduate, in his first season with the Explorers.

LAST TIME OUT: Providence 77, La Salle 47
> La Salle fell 77-47 to Providence in the final game of the Friar Holiday Classic.
> The Explorers scored just 17 first half points, as the Friars led 32-17 at the half.
> A huge 22-10 third quarter advantage for the Friars put the game away.
> Kayla Spruill finished with a team-best 15 points, while Shalina Miller added nine points.
> Deja King was named to the All-Tournament Team, averaging 10.3 points and 5.0 rebounds in three games. 

TEMPLE VS. LA SALLE
> Temple leads the all-time series against La Salle, 25-21, including winning five straight.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Temple 69, La Salle 52 
> Temple opened the 2017 Big 5 season with a 69-52 win on the road at La Salle. 
> The Owls led by just four points at the break, but used significant runs in the third and fourth quarters to grab the win.
> Temple shot 51.5% (17-33) in the second half to seal the win.
> Senior Tanaya Atkinson tallied 21 points with seven rebounds, while rookie Emani Mayo had 10 points with six rebounds.
> Freshman Mia Davis scored seven points with a team-high nine rebounds.
> For La Salle, Adreana Miller tallied 16 points, while Sofilia Ngwafang had 10 points and a team-best five rebounds.
> Amy Griffin and Shalina Miller each added eight points.

BATTLE IN THE BIG 5
> Temple is 1-1 in Philadelphia Big 5 play with a win over Saint Joseph's and a loss to Villanova. 
> The Owls will continue Big 5 play on December 30 a hosting La Salle.
> Temple finished 2-2 in the Big 5 last year, with wins over La Salle and Saint Joseph's.
> Penn and Villanova tied for the title, each going 3-1. 
> Saint Joseph's and La Salle each finished with 1-3 records.
> Temple has gone 81-79 in the Big 5 since play begane in 1979.
> The Owls own 10 Big 5 titles, including three under Cardoza. The most recent Temple Big 5 crown came in 2016-17 when the Cherry and White went 4-0 against their local rivals.
