Davis and Defense Key Women's Basketball Win Over Iona

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team got back into the win column with a 59-39 victory over visiting Iona on Thursday night at McGonigle Hall. The Owls improved to 3-5 overall after spending the last month on the road, while Iona dips to 1-7.
Keys to the Game
> Temple worked around a messy game with a huge 43-27 advantage on the glass, including a 17-2 edge in second chance points.
> The Owls held Iona to 32% from the field and just 18.8% from long range, allowing a season low 39 points.
Individual Highlights
> Sophomore Mia Davis continued her outstanding season with 25 points and a season-best 14 rebounds, recording her third-straight double-double and fourth overall.
> Graduate student Alliya Butts and freshman Marissa Mackins each added nine points and three steals with Butts adding six assists and Mackins, four.
> Sophomore Emani Mayo chipped in with five points, while Butts, senior Lena Niang, and junior Shantay Taylor all pulled down four rebounds.
First Quarter
> Temple had a hot start both offensively and defensively, scoring the first 11 points of the game.
> The Owls held Iona scoreless for over eight minutes, as the Gaels netted their first bucket with 1:59 on the clock.
> Temple and Iona traded buckets into the break, with the Owls up 13-4.
Second Quarter
> Back and forth action opened the second frame, before Temple scored five straight to take their largest lead of the game at 24-10.
> Iona cut into the lead with a 5-2 run, but Temple answered, taking a 28-17 lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter
> Temple outscored Iona 18-12 to increase the lead after three.
> The Owls opened on a 15-5 run, backed by nine Davis points.
> Iona hit their first three of the game late in the frame, keying a 7-3 spurt that made it 46-29 after the break.
Fourth Quarter
> With the game in hand, Temple outscored Iona 13-10 to close out the 20-point win.
