Comeback Falls Short for Women's Basketball at Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Temple women's basketball team cut a 16 point deficit down to just three late in the fourth quarter, but the comeback fell short on the road, as the Owls lost 88-81 at Wichita State. The loss dips Temple to 10-15 overall, 2-10 in conference play, while the Shockers improve to 11-16 overall, 6-7 in The American.

KEYS TO THE GAME
> Wichita State shot a massive 70% (35-50) for the game, including 53.8% from three (7-13) to build up a huge first half lead that they were able to hold on to.
> The Shockers' offensive explosion out-shadowed a season-best 12 threes for Temple, which shot 44.6% for the game.
> The Owls out-rebounded Wichita State, 29-26, with turnovers nearly even at 19 for WSU and 18 for the Owls.
> Temple out-scored the Shockers 50-43 in the final 20 minutes, but fell just shy down the stretch.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
> Senior Tanaya Atkinson led the Owls with 22 points, also grabbing four rebounds with four assists.
> Freshman Emani Mayo finished with 15 points, tying a career-best with five assists.
> Graduate student Mykia Jones set a new career mark with 15 points, also pulling down four boards.
> Freshman Mia Davis had 13 points, while classmate Breanna Perry finished with a team-best five rebounds.

FIRST QUARTER
> Wichita State scored the first seven points of the game, before Temple went on a 7-3 surge to tie things at 9-9 on a Mayo free throw.
> The Shockers answered with another surge, this one 12-5, to push the lead to 21-14.
> Temple then got back-to-back buckets from Davis and Mayo to cut it to 21-18 after one.

SECOND QUARTER
> Temple took its first lead of the game at 25-24 after a 7-3 run to open the second quarter.
> Wichita State pushed back, with a 16-2 surge, to go up 40-27 with under two minutes to play.
> A Breanna Perry lay-up interrupted the Wichita State scoring, but the Shockers finished out the frame with a 45-31 lead.

THIRD QUARTER
> The Owls opened the third on an 8-4 run to get the lead to 10 points, 49-39.
> Wichita State, sparked by 13 points from star forward, Rangie Bessard, pushed the lead back to 13 with under two minutes left.
> Temple rallied to cut it to 67-56 with an Atkinson three point play.

FOURTH QUARTER
> A full court press and hot three point shooting saw Temple get the Wichita State lead down to just three points, 81-78, with 4:10 to play.
> The Shockers pushed it back to seven points on a pair of free throws, before Temple again whittled it to just four points on a three point play from Atkinson.
> With the clock down to just 45 seconds, the Owls were forced to play the foul game over the final stretch.
> The Shockers made just enough free throws to close things out, and Temple couldn't hit its threes over the last minute, setting the final to 88-81.
