Lacrosse Hosts No. 9 Princeton on Saturday

2.16.18 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA - To continue its hot start, Temple lacrosse will have to get past a Top 10 team as the Owls (2-0) host #9 Princeton at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17. The Tigers earned their ranking in the IWLCA Preseason Poll, but have not yet played a game in 2018.

Scouting Temple
> The Owls are off to a 2-0 start, winning 12-8 vs. Rutgers in their season opener at home on Feb. 10, and dominating in an 18-7 road win at Monmouth on Feb. 17.
> Senior Nicole Barretta has had career performances in both games already, and is the reigning BIG EAST Attacker of the Week. After adding a career-high four assists to four goals for a career-high eight total points in the Rutgers win, Barretta scored a career-high seven goals (six in the first half) in the Monmouth victory. Her 15 total points lead all players in NCAA Division I, with her 11 goals ranking second and her 5.5 goals per game ranking third.
> Fellow senior Kira Gensler also scored a career-high four goals in the win over the Scarlet Knights. The hat trick was the second of Gensler's career, and the fifth for Barretta, who now has six overall.
> Nine different players scored for Temple at Monmouth, and the Owls had 12 total saves (nine by sophomore Maryn Lowell, three by redshirt sophomore Kelsea Hershey). Senior defender Nicole Latgis collected a career-high eight draw controls.
> The Owls will play 11 of their 17 regular-season games at Howarth Field, including a stretch of five straight in March.
> Temple is coming off a 13-5 season that saw the Owls make their second-straight appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament since joining the league as an associate member in 2014. They fell 21-9 to #2 Florida in the BIG EAST Semifinals.
> Team captains for 2018, as voted on by the Owls, are Gensler and Latgis along with sophomore Kara Nakrasius. Latgis, a defender and 2017 BIG EAST Second Team honoree, was a unanimous selection to the 2018 BIG EAST Preseason Team.
> Head Coach Bonnie Rosen is now in her 12th season at the helm. She stands at 167-174 after 21 years as a head coach, and is 99-93 at Temple (11 years), needing just one more win to reach 100.

Scouting Princeton
> The Tigers, ranked ninth in the IWLCA Preseason Coaches Poll, are coming off their 13th Ivy League title, third Ivy League Tournament title and 25th NCAA appearance.
> Princeton lost two first-team All-Americans to graduation after the 2017 season, but brought in the second-best recruiting class in the nation according to Inside Lacrosse.
> That class includes the 2017 US Lacrosse Player of the Year in Kyla Sears, along with the 2017 Inside Lacrosse All-Rookie selection Tess D'Orsi.
> Princeton returns its core midfield unit, including second-team All-Ivy Leaguer Ellie McNulty and All-Tournament selection Elizabeth George.

All-Time Series
> The Tigers lead 21-9 in the all-time series against Temple, most recently winning 19-3 on their home field in 2017, and winning 14-13 in Philadelphia in 2012.
> The two teams first met in 1980, and played each season from 1991-2010.
> Princeton has won two straight, with the Owls last winning 14-12 in 2010, upsetting the 17th-ranked Tigers.
