Owls Excel in Distance Events on Day Two of AAC Championships
5.12.18 | Women's Track and Field
CINCINNATI - Four Owls advanced to Sunday's final in the 1,500 meter, and freshman Lucy Jones scored points for Temple track & field while breaking her own school record in the 3,000m Steeplechase on day two of the American Athletic Conference Championships. Competition in Cincinnati wraps up tomorrow with field events, a relay and three run finals for Temple.
3,000 Meter Steeplechase
> Jones finished just over a second better than her previous school record with a time of 10:39.36 to place sixth and earn three points for the Owls.
> Senior Katie Pinson also earned a point, placing eighth in 10:45.24.
1,500 Meter Run Prelims
> Four Temple runners finished in the top 12 overall in the prelims to advance to Sunday's final.
> Sophomore Millie Howard led the way, placing second in her heat and fourth overall in a time of 4:35.85.
> Pinson qualified for her first of two finals, taking seventh overall in 4:36.32. Sophomore Grace Moore placed 10th in 4:37.30, and junior Ashton Dunkley placed 11th in a personal-best time of 4:41.26.
100 Meter Hurdles Prelims
> Freshman Ebonee Jackson was just .07 off her personal best, placing 10th overall in 13.98 but missing a qualifying position by two spots. Fellow freshman Sydney Williams finished 14th overall in 14.69.
400 Meter Dash Prelims
> Freshman Mallory Smith was just over a second off her best time, placing 14th in 57.86.
Long Jump
> Freshman Candus Burks placed 18th, scoring her best jump of 5.40 meters on her first attempt.
Quotes from Head Coach Elvis Forde
> "Having Ashton (Dunkley) advance in the 1,500 was a nice surprise, while not having Helene (Gottlieb) do the same was a disappointment, but nevertheless we have four people moving on in that event and we're excited to see what will happen."
> "We had a couple runners doubling up with a short recovery time from the 1,500 to the steeplechase with Katie (Pinson) and Grace (Moore) doing both. Lucy was the freshest and able to power through. Katie was able to hang on in the end, but Grace got the worst of it and the warm temperatures might have gotten the best of them. We maybe have to think that through a little bit more, but it's the risk we have to take with a small squad."
> "Mallorie (Smith) had some bumps and bruises in the 400 hurdles, and Ebonee (Jackson) was so close but it wasn't enough to advance by just a tenth of a second which is sometimes even tougher."
> "All in all it was a tough day but our kids competed very well. Those that are in the finals tomorrow just have to put their head down and get after it and we'll let the chips fall where they may."
Up Next
> Temple will compete in seven total events on a busy Sunday of competition, starting with the javelin throw at noon. Junior Katie Leisher will be the last to compete, racing in the 5,000m run at 6:40 p.m.
