Temple Athletics' Single-Year APR Ranks Second Among NCAA Division I FBS Schools

PHILADELPHIA - It is almost impossible to keep raising such a high bar of academic success, but Temple Athletics has managed to do it yet again as the department recorded a single-year Academic Performance Rate (APR) that ranks second in NCAA Division I among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions, and is now tied for ninth in multi-year APR.

The Owls' average single-year APR was a record 996, topped only by Northwestern with a 997. After ranking 12th in multi-year APR among FBS institutions a year ago, Temple's average multi-year APR of 992 is now tied for ninth with Duke, Illinois, Arizona State and Rice.

The NCAA released its Division I APR data on Wednesday, a week after Temple was announced to have seven programs be recipients of the NCAA's Academic Performance Program (APP) Public Recognition, honoring the top 10 percent of Division I teams across the nation for their multi-year academic performance. The Owls' seven teams were the most in the American Athletic Conference, and tied their own record from a year ago.

"To not only maintain the standard of excellence our student-athletes have become known for, but to continue to build upon it, is just incredible," said Temple University Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. "Academic success has become synonymous with Temple Athletics, and it's a credit to our young men and women who continue to further that reputation. The success is not theirs alone, as it's truly a team effort with Justin Miller and his academic support team as well our coaches and sport administrators who understand the importance of being a student first."

Temple's multi-year APR of 992 is the highest among all full members of the American Athletic Conference. Seven teams ranked at the top in their respective sports, with nine ranked in the top three and 12 in the top four, including two in the BIG EAST Conference. Temple's jump to seven teams receiving public recognition, from 2007-08 to 2016-17, is tied for second in the nation.

For the 2016-17 academic year, Temple's teams posted a record number of 14 perfect 1000 single-year APR scores. Fifteen programs either tied or set a new program high for either their single or multi-year scores.

The Owls' football program continues to post outstanding numbers in the NCAA data, and is now the only FBS program with a multi-year APR that has never decreased. Temple football's APR ranks 21st among FBS institutions.

In last week's APP release, Temple men's tennis was recognized for a fifth year in a row, while men's cross country and women's tennis made the list for a third straight year. Men's and women's basketball, women's cross country and women's soccer were all honored by the NCAA for a second consecutive year.
