Howard Comes up One Spot Short in 1500 Meter at NCAA Regional
5.26.18 | Women's Track and Field
TAMPA, Fla. - It was a tough result for Temple track & field's Millie Howard, as the sophomore missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships by just one spot. Howard placed 13th in the quarterfinals of the 1,500 meter run at the the NCAA East Regional on Saturday, and only the top 12 advanced.
Howard set a school record two days ago in the first round with a time of 4:18.73, but lost a few seconds off that time in the quarterfinal, finishing in 4:21.96. Her track season now concludes, but she'll be back on the cross country course for the Owls in August.
"Millie ran well but came up a little short and you can only do that in horseshoes," said Temple head coach Elvis Forde. "She was just a couple steps slower than she needed to be but you know what, it's the end of a great season for her and it's only her second year. It was a tremendous experience for her. Hopefully everyone here benefited from it and we look forward to next year and to these athletes hopefully helping the others to be just as good and make it here as well. This result will sting a little bit more for Millie, getting so close, but from December to now she's made huge strides and accomplished a tremendous amount."
The Owls' three representatives at the NCAA East Regional were their most since 2010. Both Howard and freshman Helene Gottlieb (800 meter) set school records in their first-round races, and freshman Aisha Brown also competed in the high jump after a second-place showing for Temple at the American Athletic Conference Championships.
