Volleyball Hosts Cherry & White Challenge this Weekend

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team will host the 2018 Cherry and White Challenge this weekend at McGonigle Hall. The Owls will welcome Maryland, UNH, and Princeton to the event.
TEMPLE SCHEDULE
> Friday: Temple vs. Maryland, 6:00 p.m.
> Saturday: Temple vs. UNH, 11:00 a.m.; Temple vs. Princeton, 7:00 p.m.

PROMOTIONS
> WHITE OUT: Temple's match against Maryland is a white out match with the first 200 fans receiving a free t-shirt. The Owls will also raffle off $100 Diamond Dollars at the match.
> Welcome International Students: Temple would like to make a special invite to all International students on campus for Saturday's matches, with free pizza available in the 7:00 p.m. match against Princeton.
THE OWLS
> The Owls are 1-8 to start the season, but have played tough competition in non-conference tournaments so far.
> Last time out, the Owls fell to High Point (3-0), #21 Utah (3-2), and Villanova (3-1) at the Villanova Classic.
> Graduate student Iva Deak was named to the Villanova Classic Invitational All-Tournament team, after an impressive performance, which included 15 kills, seven digs, and five blocks in a near upset over #21 Utah.
> The Owls are led by junior Dana Westfield's 2.50 kills per set, while Papazoglou adds 2.41 and freshman Gem Grimshaw, 1.82.
> Senior Hannah Vandegrift leads Temple with 5.25 assists per set, while freshman Tyler Lindgren adds 4.71 assists per set.
> Senior Mia Heirakuji leads the defense with 3.53 digs per frame with senior Carla Guennewig tallying a team-high 1.09 blocks per set.
SCOUTING MARYLAND
> Maryland carries a 7-2 mark into the Cherry & White Challenge.
> Last time out, the Terrapins went 2-1 at their home tournament, with wins over Colgate (3-0) and Liberty (3-0), but a 3-2 loss to South Carolina.
> The Terps are led by Erika Prichard, a solid all-around threat, who has racked up 4.38 kills and 2.88 digs per set with 26 total blocks on the year.
> Liz Twilley (2.62 k/s) and Jada Gardner (2.16 k/s) also bolster the Maryland attack, which has hit .250 this season.
> Nicole Alford is the primary setter, dishing out 10.19 helpers per frame.
> Allegra Rivas leads the defense with 4.09 digs per set, while Katie Myers leads the team with 34 total blocks and Rainelle Jones has 31.
