Women's Soccer Downs Wagner 3-0

9.16.18 | Women's Soccer

Staten Island, N.Y. - Temple women's soccer (4-5) dominated possession and recorded its fourth shutout of the season this afternoon, defeating Wagner (1-7) 3-0.

Keys to the Match
> The Owls got on the board early with a Morgan Morocco goal in the sixth minute. Morocco controlled a pass from Hailey Gutowski and found the left side of the net for her first goal of the season.
> Junior Jules Blank increased Temple's advantage to two in the 55th minute.  Blank beat two Seahawks' defenders, took a touch and evaded a challenge from the goalie. She went on to score for her third goal of the season.
> Temple all but ensured the match's outcome in the 72nd minute after an Emma Wilkins goal, her fifth of the season. Sophomore Marissa DiGenova took a shot from the top of the box that rebounded off the crossbar and straight to Wilkins. She settled it on her chest and found the back of the net to put the Owls up 3-0.

Match Notes
> Emily Keitel nearly got on the scoresheet for the Owls off a 35-yard free kick in the 28th minute.  Keitel's kick soared over all players and took a favorable high bounce in the box. The Seahawks keeper managed to tip it up to the crossbar and out of the net to prevent the goal.
> The Owls tallied three goals for the second time this season. The other instance was on August 26 in a 3-0 victory over Delaware State.
> Temple recorded its fourth shutout of the season. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Basileo has recorded wins in all of these shutouts.
> The organization and discipline of the Owls' backline was on display again today. They drew the Seahawks offside eight times and were instrumental in the shutout.
> Temple dominated possession in the match. They held a 17-5 shots and 9-0 shots on goal advantage over the Seahawks. It was a total team effort to keep the offensive pressure on, as 13 different Owls recorded shot opportunities.
> With this afternoon's victory, the Owls now lead the all-time series against Wagner 6-0.

Quotable
> "We committed to playing just a little higher up the field and being more aggressive in getting forward," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "We were trying to start our possession in their half of the field. I think the front group did a great job of applying pressure higher up the field and because of their pressure we were able to win the ball higher. We did a much better job today of finding all the different pockets of space and making ourselves more available."
> "The most pleasing part for me was that fact that we went so deep into the bench and everybody contributed," said O'Connor.

Next Up
> The Owls travel to SMU on Thursday, Sept. 20 to take on the Mustangs at 8 p.m. EST.
