Fernandes and Lefebvre Earn AAC Weekly Honors
9.24.18 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's soccer squad captured half of the American Athletic Conference weekly honors this week after notching their first conference win over the nationally recognized UCF Knights last Friday. Junior Lukas Fernandes was named Offensive Player of the Week for the conference, while junior Simon Lefebvre earned the AAC Goalkeeper of the Week title along with Philadelphia Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week.
Fernandes has proven to be a vital threat up top for the Owls this season. He netted the game-winner for Temple on Saturday, boosting the Owls to 1-0 in the conference against the AAC preseason favorites, UCF. The goal came in the 21st minute of action, when Temple capitalized on a counterattack opportunity against an extremely skilled UCF back line. When teammate Elias Hellgren Villegas controlled the ball in the middle, Fernandes darted forward to make a run in behind. He received the split ball from Villegas, took one touch around the UCF goalie and buried what ended up being the game-winning goal. Fernandes has scored in two straight contests for the Owls, also netting the equalizer against Duquesne in the 87th minute last Sunday. These two goals pin him as the team-leader this season, also tying him for most points with freshman Jalen Campbell at four.
Lefebvre has anchored the Owls in net this season, posting 560:33 minutes throughout six starts so far this year. He boasts a goals against average of 0.80, only allowing five goals against over a challenging nonconference schedule. Lefebvre has saved a team-leading 22 shots, earning him a save percentage of .815. He also has earned two shutouts so far this season, including Temple's key conference win over UCF. Against UCF, he shut down multiple shots from the boot of Cal Jennings, one of the best forwards in the nation. Lefebvre's tenacity in net has earned Temple the top spot in multiple defensive categories for the American, including goals allowed (6, 0.75/game), goals against average (0.71) and saves (31, 3.88/game). The Owls are also tied for second in the AAC for total shutouts with three, only one blank sheet behind SMU's four this season.
The Owls will take a break from conference action and will return back to the Temple Sports Complex to host the Villanova Wildcats on Wednesday, September 26. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m., and admission is free for all who attend.
