9.25.18 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's soccer squad takes a break from conference play this Wednesday as they host Villanova for a 7:00 p.m. match-up between the Philadelphia rivals. The Owls enter the contest 3-4-1, and will play at the Temple Sports Complex for just the third time this season.
Scouting the Owls
> Temple is coming off of a critical conference win over AAC preseason favorite UCF, a squad that also received 92 votes in the latest national poll. The Cherry and White look to extend their unbeaten streak to three after tying Duquesne their previous game, 1-1, thanks to a Lukas Fernandes equalizer in the 87th minute.
> The talent of Temple's offense is widely distributed, illustrated by nine different players contributing at least one point on the season. Fernandes heads the Owls up top with two goals, tying freshman Jalen Campbell in points with four apiece.
> Simon Lefebvre has anchored the Owls in net this season, posting 560:33 minutes throughout six starts so far this year. He boasts a goals against average of 0.80, only allowing five goals against over a challenging non-conference schedule and one AAC match. Lefebvre has saved a team-leading 22 shots, earning him a save percentage of .815.
Last Time Out
> Temple's Friday night conference opener started in a high-paced fashion that never dwindled for 90 minutes of play, as both teams fought relentlessly in an extremely physical competition.
> The lone goal of the match came off the boot of Fernandes in the 21st minute of action, when he collected a through ball from Elias Hellgren Villegas that he slipped past the UCF keeper.
> Strong defensive efforts from the Owls kept the Knights scoreless for the remainder of the match, shutting down UCF's dominant Cal Jennings, one of the top forwards in the nation.
Scouting Villanova
> Villanova comes across Philadelphia to the TSC after a Big East home loss to a talented No. 12 Creighton squad, 1-0. Villanova is 5-3-0 on the season, with their other two losses coming from Clemson and Marquette.
> Senior midfielder Zach Zandi leads the Wildcat's offense with five goals and two assists on the season. His 12 points pins him as a threat for Villanova, especially when paired with sophomore Yusuf Cueceoglu. Cueceoglu trails Zandi with four goals for eight points, and the two regularly set the playmaking tempo for the Wildcats.
> Carson Williams spearheads Villanova in net, playing all 732 minutes for the squad this season. He posts a goals against average of 1.35 after allowing 11 goals against this season, but has saved 33 shots that have head his way.
Over the Years
> The Owls enter the all-time series with a record of 24-10-3 over the Wildcats. Temple has not fallen to Villanova since 2012, as they look to extend their win streak to five on Wednesday. Last year, the Owls downed their local foes 1-0 off of a goal in the 42nd minute.
Close Quarters
> Not only are the Philly rivals close geographically, but on paper as well. In the past five years, the result between the two squads has been a one goal decision. The last time a Temple vs. Villanova match has been decided by more than one goal was in 2008, when the Wildcats downed the Owls, 3-1.
