Men's Soccer Travels to Cincinnati for Second Conference Clash

9.27.18 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's soccer squad returns to their conference slate this Saturday, Sept. 9th as they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on the Bearcats. The Owls look to extend their unbeaten streak to four and improve their conference record to 2-0 during this 4:00 p.m. AAC match-up.

Scouting the Owls
> Temple is coming off of a 1-1 Wednesday night draw against cross-town rival Villanova, after the game was halted at the 70:05 mark due to inclement weather. The draw was good for their second of the season, the first coming on Sept. 16 against Duquesne.
> Temple's offense has been spearheaded by junior Lukas Fernandes, proving to be a dominant threat up top for the Owls this season. For the past three games, Fernandes has been the lone goal scorer for Temple while leading the team in goals and points. Freshman Jalen Campbell has also been a steady contributor to the Cherry and White offense this season, adding one goal and two assists to the scoresheet.
> Junior Simon Lefebvre has anchored the Owls in net this season, posting 630:38 minutes throughout seven starts so far this year. The reigning AAC Goalkeeper of the Week boasts a goals against average of 0.86, only allowing six goals against over a challenging non-conference schedule and one AAC match. Lefebvre has saved a team-leading 27 shots, earning him a save percentage of .818.
> Consistent defensive efforts along with stellar goalkeeping performances from Lefebvre and junior Michael Samnik have put the Owls at the top of the AAC for multiple categories, including goals against average (0.76), goals allowed (7), second in saves (Lefebvre, 36, 4.00/g) and second for longest current unbeaten streak (3).

Last Time Out
>The lone Cherry and White goal against Villanova came off the boot of Fernandes, the reigning AAC Offensive Player of the Week. The quick-footed junior made a darting run behind the Wildcat defenders in the 18th minute of action, anticipating the play wisely. When Justin Hahn fed him the perfect through pass, he sped past his defenders to put the ball in the back of the net for his third goal of the season
> Villanova found the equalizer in the 54th minute of action, when Zach Zandi sent a corner kick to the top of the six yard box, finding Yusuf Cueceoglu who put the ball away to even the score. This was the final major play of the match, as it was cut short due to inclement weather.

Scouting Cincinnati
> Cincinnati enters the match with a record of 2-7, coming off of a 3-1 win over IUPUI. The Bearcats fell in their lone conference game of the season at Memphis, 1-0.
> Two Cincinnati players are tied at the top of the scoresheet, with Austin Smythe and Rex Epps each notching two goals and one assist for five points apiece. Eleven different Bearcats have notched at least one point this season to add to the leading goal scorers' nods.
> Two players have split the majority of the time in net this season for Cincinnati, with Noah Lawrence and Pearce Skinner each playing four games. Skinner has saved nine shots compared to Lawrence's six, and was between the posts for Cincinnati's one shutout on the season.

Over the Years
> The Owls enter the all-time series against the Bearcats with a record of 4-3-0. Temple looks to extend their win-streak to two after defeating Cincinnati in 2017, 2-1. It was a physical battle, as 10 yellow cards were given throughout last year's conference clash at the Temple Sports Complex.

Weekly Honors
> Temple captured half of the American Athletic Conference weekly honors this week after notching their first conference win over the nationally recognized UCF Knights last Friday. Fernandes was named Offensive Player of the Week for the conference, while Lefebvre earned the AAC Goalkeeper of the Week title along with Philadelphia Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week. Lefebvre was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for his efforts between the posts against UCF.
