Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest to Houston

HOUSTON — In a back-and-forth game, the Temple women's basketball team fell victim to one too many runs from Houston, falling 78-65 on the road in conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Owls dip to 4-11 (0-3) with the loss, while Houston improves to 8-8 overall, 2-1 in conference play.
Keys to the Game
> After a hot first quarter, Temple led by as many as 11 points in the second, before giving up a huge Houston run that put the hosts up by four.
> Trailing by nine, the Owls cut into Cougars lead in the third and tied it up early in the fourth before a final surge from the hosts sealed it,
> Houston shot 47.3% from the field to Temple's 43.6%, while holding a 37-29 advantage on the glass.
> The Owls picked up nine steals but turned the ball over 18 times in the loss.
Individual Highlights
> Sophomore Mia Davis paced the Owls with 19 points.
> Graduate student Alliya Butts had 16 points, four assists and three steals, while sophomore Desiree Oliver had eight points and four assists.
> Junior Shantay Taylor ended her afternoon with six points and five rebounds while sophomore Breanna Perry tied her for team high honors with five boards.
First Quarter
> Houston held an early lead, before Temple went on a run to go up by eight.
> Trailing 5-2, back-to-back bucks from Taylor and Davis put the Owls up for the first time, 10-6.
> After Houston cut it to two, Temple closed the frame on a 10-4 surge, backed by a pair of Davis threes to lead 20-12.
Second Quarter
> Temple's lead increased to 11 points, before Houston used an extended run to regain the advantage.
> With the Owls up 25-14, Houston used a 12-2 surge to cut it to one at 27-26.
> An Oliver three padded the Temple advantage back to four (30-26), but the Cougars continued to surge.
> The hosts rattled off eight unanswered points to take a 34-30 lead, before a Mackins three cut the Temple deficit to 34-33 at the break.
Third Quarter
> The lead changed hands twice in the frame before Houston took a one point edge after three.
> The Cougars scored seven straight to open the quarter with a 41-33 advantage.
> Temple answered with a 10-2 run to go up, 49-45.
> Houston regained the lead and pushed it to 56-60, before scores from Butts and Oliver cut it to 56-55 after three.
Fourth Quarter
> Temple tied the game at 58-58 on a Butts three early in the quarter, but an 11-3 run from Houston all but sealed it.
> The Owls cut it to seven late in the quarter, but Houston ended the frame with six unanswered to finish out the win.
> The Cougars ended with a 22-10 advantage in the frame.
