PHILADELPHIA - Temple student-athletes again raised the bar for academic success this fall, posting a department-record 3.24 semester grade point average. That is the highest semester GPA on record, surpassing the 3.23 GPA achieved in the Spring 2016 semester. It also marked the eight semester above a 3.1 GPA and the 14th consecutive semester above a 3.0.
"I am truly in awe of the incredible accomplishments by our hard-working student-athletes," said Temple University Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. "I congratulate our young men and women for their academic success and also our coaches and our exceptional academic support staff led by Justin Miller. We have instilled a winning formula for academic success here at Temple, and it is one we take great pride in."
Temple student-athletes were enrolled in 85 different majors/programs in the Fall 2018 semester. They combined for a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher in 68 different majors led by Theater (4.0), English (3.93), Strategic Communication (3.93), Architecture (3.92) and Philosophy (3.87).
Each class of student-athletes earned a combined 3.0 semester GPA led by those holding senior (90+ credits) status, who posted a 3.31 GPA. Additionally, 16 student-athletes were enrolled in eight different graduate programs or certificates and combined for a 3.22 GPA.
Individually, a record 71.5 percent (362 total) of Temple student-athletes earned a 3.0+ GPA during the fall semester, marking the eighth consecutive semester that the Owls topped the 60 percent threshold. There were 211 student-athletes (47.7%) that earned a 3.5 or greater semester GPA, which is a first in program history while 28 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall.
Seventeen of Temple's 19 varsity sports posted a combined semester GPA above a 3.00 led by men's and women's cross country, which earned combined GPAs of 3.61 and 3.73, respectively.
Eleven teams posted combined GPAs of 3.40 or higher with six programs eclipsing the 3.50 mark. Also, not one Temple team had its semester GPA decrease from the Fall 2017 semester.
Overall, 17 programs have a cumulative GPA of better than 3.0, led by women's cross country (3.71) and men's cross country (3.58). Additionally, 12 programs improved their GPA from the previous fall semester.
