Indoor Competition Continues as Track & Field Heads to Columbia Challenge

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University track and field team has an exciting weekend ahead as they travel to the Bronx to compete at the Columbia Challenge. The two-day meet will kick off on Friday, Jan. 25 and run through Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Armory in New York.
About the Columbia Challenge
Friday
> Sophomore Sydney Williams will start day one off for Temple on the track, racing the 60m hurdles prelims at 2:05 p.m. Finals for the event are scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Fellow sophomore Kayla Nesbitt-McEwen will then begin the field events for the Owls in the long jump at 2:30 p.m.
> Temple will put together a distance medley relay for the first time this season. The powerful foursome of sophomore Helene Gottlieb, junior Millie Howard, freshman Marissa White and junior Grace Moore will hit the track at 2:35 p.m. for the DMR.
Saturday
> The Owls will see more action in day two of the meet. Sophomores Lucy Jones and Michelle Joyce, junior Kira Von Ehren and senior Katie Leisher will kick off the morning section of the 3000m at 10 a.m. Moore will race the 3000m in the later section at 2:48 p.m.
> The 400m will feature White and sophomore Mallorie Smith at 11:02 a.m. Following, Gottlieb will represent the Owls in the 800m at 12:41 p.m.
> Sophomore Candus Burks will participate in the triple jump at 1:30 p.m., followed by sophomore Aisha Brown in the high jump at 2 p.m.
> Howard will represent the Owls in the final individual event of the weekend, running the mile at 3:08 p.m. To wrap up the Columbia Challenge, the Owls will look to run their fastest 4x400 relay of the season at 3:30 p.m.
Last Time Out
> The Owls are coming off of another solid weekend on the track at the Penn 8-Team Select, which was highlighted by multiple top-10 finishes.
> Williams kicked off the meet with a successful 60m hurdles race. In prelims, the sophomore had a solid run of 9.07 to qualify her through to the next round. In the finals, she ran a season-best 8.94, breaking 9.00 for the first time this season and earning fourth overall.
> Moore hit the track for the first time this season, putting on an impressive performance in the mile. The junior ran the 1600m race in 4:48.90, surpassing her previous PR of 4:51.29 by over two seconds to earn silver. Fellow junior Von Ehren ran the mile for the first time in Cherry and White, finishing seventh with a time of 4:57.39.
> Consistently dropping time in the 400m each week since the season opener, White stuck to the pattern at the Penn 8-Team Select. She dropped nearly half a second since last weekend, finishing the race in 57.29 to best her previous college-best of 57.72. Junior Madison Beecher also ran her fastest 400m of the season, finishing 14th in 59.34.
> Smith had a standout performance in the 200m, placing 14th with a time of 25.67. Beecher finished near after with a time of 25.72.
> Gottlieb raced for the first time this season, finishing sixth in the 800m with a time of 2:10.71. Howard trailed just behind with a time of 2:11.82 to earn seventh.
> The 4x400 relay consisting of Brown, White, Gottlieb and Beecher crushed the best time for this season, finishing second with a time of 3:50.70.

> White's 400m time of 57.29 currently ranks her 11th in the American. The freshman has continuously brought her time down since her first race at the Lehigh Season Opener.
> Gottlieb currently ranks second in the AAC in the 800m after posting a time of 2:10.71 last weekend. As a freshman, Gottlieb finished fourth at the AAC Outdoor Championships in the event, sending her to the NCAA East Regional prelims where she reset the school record to 2:07.10.
> Brown set a new indoor college-best in the high jump last weekend after clearing 1.73m, currently tying her for third in the AAC. As a freshman, she was an all-conference performer in the event at outdoor championships and finished the season ranked No. 1 in the east region.
