Women's Basketball Snaps Skid with Decisive Win over ECU

1.26.19 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Alliya Butts and Mia Davis combined for 48 points to lead the Temple women's basketball team to an 84-62 win over visiting ECU Saturday at McGonigle Hall.  The Owls snapped a seven-game losing skid to improve to 5-14, 1-5 in American Athletic Conference play while the Pirates dropped their fourth straight and are now 10-9, 1-5.

Keys to the Game
> Temple's defense held ECU to 30.6 percent (22-72) shooting from the field and just 2-of-15 (13.3%) from long range.
> The Owls broke the game open in the third quarter, using a 12-4 run over a three-minute stretch to extend their advantage to 19 points (57-38).   ECU would get no closer than 15 the remainder of the contest.
> Three-point shooting was big for the Cherry and White as the Owls drained 11 threes, their most since connecting on 13 against DePaul on Dec. 3.
> Temple dished a season-best 20 assists (on 28 baskets) with Butts leading the way with six and Davis passing for a season-high four.

Individual Highlights
> Butts scored a season-high 28 points and her five three-pointers (8 attempts) were also a season best.
> Davis, who notched her seventh double-double on the season, scored 20 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.  It marked her first 20 point game since tallying 22 points against Villanova on Dec. 9.  That Villanova game was also the last time a Temple player had scored 20 points in a game.
> Marissa Mackins, who scored a career-high 19 points at Penn on Wednesday, grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in the win.
> Lena Niang (13) and Emani Mayo (11) also reached double figures for the Owls.
> Nicolette Mayo scored her first collegiate points with the final basket on the game.

First Quarter
> Temple used a 9-0 run over a four-minute stretch to take an 18-11 lead before ECU's Alex Frazier (19 pts, 10 rebs) ended the quarter with a foul line jumper.
> The Owls defense held the Pirates to 26 percent shooting (6-23) in the opening period, but seven TU turnovers kept the score close.

Second Quarter
> The Owls scored 10 of the first 11 points of the quarter with Butts draining two three-pointers in the opening minutes to fuel the run.
> Temple held ECU without a field goal, taking a 28-14 lead, until Destiny Campbell drained consecutive jumpers to snap a 0-6 shooting for the Pirates.  That led to ECU going on a 12-4 run to close out the half.
> Davis nearly had a double-double at the break, leading all players with 11 rebounds to go along with her eight points

Third Quarter
> Butts (8) and Davis (8) combined for 16 points in a 21-9 run over the first six and a half minutes of the quarter to give the Owls their largest lead, 53-35.
> The Owls defense held the Pirates to 3-18 shooting in the period (16.7%) while forcing five turnovers in taking a 57-39 advantage into the fourth quarter.
> As a team, TU made eight of its 12 shots in the frame, including 2-of-6 from long range.

Fourth Quarter
> Five three-pointers, including two by Butts and Lena Niang, were too much for ECU as the Owls would break the game open over the final 10 minutes.
> Temple, which led by as many as 25 (80-55) in the quarter, shot 9-of-15 (60%) for the period and five-of-seven from long range.
