Men's Basketball Falls 73-66 at #13/13 Houston

1.31.19 | Men's Basketball

HOUSTON - Foul trouble was too much to overcome for Temple men's basketball in a 73-66 loss at #13/13 Houston (21-1, 8-1), as the Cougars made enough free throws to hold off the Owls (15-6, 5-3) and win their 31st straight home game.

Game Summary
> Although Houston shot poorly at the line, just 64 percent, the Cougars had 36 opportunities and made 23 of them while Temple shot well but was just 12-of-14.
> The Owls had three players finish with four fouls, getting whistled for 23 fouls overall compared to just 13 for Houston.
> Two points was the largest lead for Temple during a back-and-forth stretch of the first half. The Owls trailed by six at halftime and were never able to take a lead in the second half.
> Temple got a 10-point Houston lead down to five twice in the final 1:13, but could get no closer as the Cougars' Corey Davis, Jr. (24 points) made 6-of-6 free throws in that stretch.
> The Owls remain the only team to have beaten Houston this season, but fell short in their attempt at a sweep.

Individual Highlights
> Junior Quinton Rose was the Owls' lone player to score in double figures, posting a season-high tying 26 points for the second time in three games. He went 7-for-8 at the stripe and also dished four assists.
> Sophomore De'Vondre Perry pulled down a career- and team-high eight rebounds.

First Half
> Houston got seven points on the board before the Owls' Justyn Hamilton hit two free throws, and Temple's first field goal was an Alston three-pointer at 16:24.
> Still trailing 15-9, J.P. Moorman II and Rose hit treys 25 seconds apart for the game's first tie, which was followed by another tie at 17-17.
> The lead changed hands six times over a three-minute stretch before the final tie of the half at 27-27 with 3:53 remaining.
> The Owls went cold over those final minutes, missing six straight shots before getting their only two points on an Alani Moore II jumper with 30 seconds left.
> Houston closed out the half on an 8-2 run for a 35-29 lead at the break.

Second Half
> Temple came out stronger to start the second half and got within one a few times before tying the game for a fourth time at 40-40 near the 15-minute mark.
> From there, Houston used a 7-0 run to take the lead for good, later building that advantage to 10 points on two occasions.
> The second double digit lead for Houston came with two minutes left at 67-57 before a Rose three-pointer and two Nate Pierre-Louis free throws got the Owls within five, but the six points Houston got from Davis at the line in the remaining time was enough to seal the win.
