Davis Earns Unanimous Selection as Women’s Basketball is Picked to Finish Sixth in American

PHILADELPHIA -- Junior Mia Davis earned a unanimous selection to the American Athletic Conference Preseason First Team as the Temple women's basketball team was picked to finish sixth in the 2019-20 preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches. 

Davis was just one of two players that were unanimously selected to the Preseason All-Conference First Team. UConn's Crystal Dangerfield also earned the unanimous nod from the conference coaches and was tabbed Preseason Co-Player of the year alongside Kay Kay Wright of UCF. 

Davis was named First Team All-Conference at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season and earned another unanimous selection to the conference's All-Freshman Team following the 2017-18 season. The Baltimore, Md. native averaged 18.9 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per game to lead the Owls last year. Davis her sophomore campaign with 28 double-digit games, including 13 games with more than 20 points. She scored a career-best 33 points against Houston while tying her career-high 17 rebounds for a monstrous double-double as the Owls won the conference matchup 76-65. Davis boasts a total of 12 double-doubles as she begins her third season on North Broad Street.   

The coaches voted six-time defending American champions, UConn, as the favorite to win the league title. The Huskies grabbed 11 of 12 first-place votes as UConn totaled 121 points to finish ahead of USF (107 pts) for the top spot in the preseason rankings.  

UCF earned one first-place vote and tied with Cincinnati for third with 96 points apiece. Houston followed with 81 points while Temple garnered 68 points. Tulane (59), Memphis (42), Wichita State (37), Tulsa (33), ECU (31), SMU (21) rounded out the list. 

Temple finished their 2018-19 campaign at 11-19 overall after a heartbreaking 59-58 loss to 11th seed Memphis in the first round of the American Athletic Conference tournament. 

The Owls open the 2019-20 season at home on November 5th, hosting Fairfield University for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
