AAC Men's Soccer Battle Against Cincinnati is Set for Saturday at TSC

10.3.19 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – The Owls (3-5, 0-1 AAC) are on the prowl for their fourth-straight home win as they host Cincinnati (3-6, 0-1 AAC) on Saturday, Oct. 5. The first conference battle of the year at the Temple Sports Complex is set for 7:00 p.m., as each squad looks for their first AAC victory of the season.

Last Time Out
> Overtime seemed imminent on Tuesday at the Temple Sports Complex until a 90th minute goal lifted Temple over the Old Dominion Monarchs, 1-0. Senior Leandros Lillis was the hero for the Owls when he buried the game-winner with 55 seconds left on the clock off a cross from senior captain Lukas Fernandes.
> After a defensive possession battle, it looked as though the Owls broke through and won it in the 85th minute when Lillis sent the ball in to Sean Karani, who slipped it past the ODU keeper but was ultimately called offsides. The Temple offensive pressure was rewarded soon after as Lillis notched the game-winner with just 55 seconds left on the game clock. Fernandes received the ball on the left side of box and lofted a far post cross, finding Lillis waiting to tap it in and seal the deal for the Owls.
> Lillis' goal was the first of his career, adding to the two assists he notched during the 2018 season. Fernandes' assist was his first of the season and the fifth of his career, pushing him higher on the Temple leaderboard with five points on the season (2g, 1a).

Scouting the Owls
> Temple is coached by Brian Rowland in his second season on North Broad. The Owls have accumulated a 3-5 record after opening the year with a challenging nonconference slate and kicking off AAC play at No. 11 (then No. 12) UCF where they fell, 0-2.
> Conceding eight goals in as many games played, the Temple defense has been a critical force as the Owls strive to put the pieces together offensively. Despite outshooting opponents 99-68, Temple has found the back of the net just five times season.
> Fernandes leads the Temple offense with five points from two goals and one assist. He assisted Lillis' game-winner over ODU on Tuesday and has been a threat for the Owls up top, putting 15 of his 25 shots on target this season.
> The Owls have been steady on the defensive end as the backline of Pierre Cayet, Esteban Suarez, Mickael Borger and Brandon Johnson combined with senior goalkeeper Simon Lefebvre have allowed just eight goals in as many games this year—the third best in the conference. Lefebvre's goals against average of 1.00 and his save total of 26 each rank third in the AAC as well. Temple's three shutouts are the second most in the American.

Challenge Accepted
> The Owls have faced a contingent of nationally recognized opponents already this season and have a road equally as challenging as the year progresses. Two fellow AAC teams appeared in this week's United Soccer Coaches top-25, as the polls featured No. 4 SMU and No. 11 UCF.
> Six total teams that appeared in the rankings this week are on Temple's schedule in No. 4 SMU, No. 5 Georgetown, No. 11 UCF, No. 12 St. John's, No. 24 Louisville and RV Rutgers.

Scouting the Bearcats
> Cincinnati is coached by Hylton Dayes in his 19th year at the helm of the program. Dayes has compiled a 138-165-44 record in his time with the Bearcats as the winningest coach in UC history and has lead the squad to a 3-6 record so far this season.
> The Bearcat offense exploded in its most recent contest, downing the Mastodons from Purdue Fort Wayne 5-0 in a Tuesday night home contest. The five goals was the best scoring output Cincinnati has put forth in nearly five years and notched the third victory of the season for the Bearcats.
> The dominant win was paced by a five-point game from Cincinnati's offensive leader, junior forward Darryn Commissiong. The Pickering, Ontario native has netted five goals with two assists for a team-leading 12 points. He's also fired off 19 shots this season, seven of which have gone on target.
> Fellow junior Creggton Charlton joins his teammate at the top of the scorebook for Cincinnati, leading the team with 25 shots and sitting second with nine points from four goals and one assist. 14 of his shots have gone on target as the Clarendon, Jamaica native has helped the Bearcats outshoot opponents, 137-130.
> Three different Bearcats have stood between the posts this season, but junior Noah Lawrence has spearheaded the goalkeeping with a record of 3-5 from 726 minutes in net. The Mount Vernon, N.Y. native has allowed 14 goals against in eight games (1.73 GAA) and has thwarted 31 shots. His lone shutout of the season came on Tuesday against PFW as it was the first blank sheet Cincinnati has earned all season.

The Series
> The Owls downed the Bearcats in a double overtime victory on their first meeting at the formation of the American Athletic Conference in 2013. Since then, the playing field has been evened as the teams boast a 4-4-0 record in conference-clashes over the past eight seasons.
> Cincinatti walked away with the most recent victory as the squad downed the Owls in Ohio in 2018. A sixth minute goal from the Bearcats sealed the conference victory in a physical battled that saw 41 fouls.
