10.31.19 | Women's Soccer
HARTFORD, Conn. – The Temple University women's soccer team battled UConn to a 1-1 draw in a hard-fought 110-minute contest on Thursday night. The Huskies got on the board first, but the Owls netted the equalizer in the 87th minute to force overtime. With tonight's draw, the Cherry and White's 2019 campaign has come to an end.
How it Happened
> Senior captain Emily Keitel came up big for the Owls on the defensive end. The center back made key goal line clearances in the 23rd and 28th minutes to thwart scoring opportunities for the Huskies.
> UConn got on the board in the 28th minute as Sofia Leone's header found the back of the net off a Vivien Beil corner kick to take the 1-0 lead.
> Hailey Gutowski had a strong scoring opportunity for the Cherry and White in the 31st minute. The sophomore dispossessed a Husky defender and fired a shot from the right edge of the box, but her attempt sailed wide of the far post.
> The Owls had another chance to net an equalizer in the 54th minute. Junior Arryana Daniels directed a dangerous header toward goal off an Emily Keitel free kick. Daniels' attempt landed just wide of the left post.
> Julia Dolan tested the UConn keeper, Randi Palacios, as she fired a shot from just outside the box in the 63rd minute. Palacios was forced to make a diving save to keep Temple off the board.
> The Owls broke through in the 87th minute, as Gutowski headed in the equalizer into the back of the net off a long pass from Marissa DiGenova.
> Gutowski's score forced overtime, but neither squad was able to net the game-winning goal. The Huskies had a strong opportunity in the 106th minute, but a Morgan Basileo came up big and tipped the threatening attempt over the crossbar to safety.
> UConn nearly secured the victory just seconds remaining in the second overtime period, but the play was called offside.
Match Notes
> Gutowski's equalizer was her seventh goal of the season, increasing her season point total to 16. DiGenova's assist gave her three on the year and improved her point total to five (1g, 3a).
> Basileo tallied eight saves on the evening, moving her season mark to 125.
From the Coach
> "We didn't have a great first half," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "We just didn't settle into our game. We got a goal behind, but the team responded at half time. Our second half performance was much more our style. We had a tremendous effort to compete and get the goal that forced overtime. The team just never stopped working. We're heartbroken that we couldn't put away some chances at the end, but I'm extremely proud of them and their effort. I couldn't ask for anything more from them."
