Women's Soccer Falls 2-0 to No. 9 Memphis

10.6.19 | Women's Soccer

MEMPHIS, Tenn.— Temple women's soccer (3-7-3, 1-3 AAC) took on No. 9 Memphis (12-1, 4-0 AAC) Sunday afternoon, falling 2-0 to the Tigers. Memphis got out to an early 2-0 lead by the 13th minute behind a Clarissa Larisey brace, but Temple held the nationally-ranked Tigers scoreless in the second half.

How it Happened
> Memphis got out to a quick start as Larisey found the back of the net off a corner kick in the 2nd minute. Larisey notched her second goal of the game in the 13th minute to double the Tigers' lead.
> Senior captain Morgan Basileo made some great saves to prevent Memphis scoring opportunities. In the 25th minute, she made a diving save to thwart a Larisey hat trick. Six minutes later, Basileo came off her line to challenge Larisey one-on-one and came out on top to make the save
> Sophomore Gabriela Johnson had the first threatening offensive look for the Owls in the 41st minute as she fired a shot on frame from the top of the box. Memphis' Elizabeth Moberg stepped up to stop the attempt.
> Basileo came up big again for the Owls in the 52nd minute. The senior made a sliding save a few yards in front of the goal line to stop a dangerous shot by Tanya Boychuk.
> In the 65th minute, Julia Dolan sped up the middle of the field and found Hailey Gutowski on the left flank. Gutowski took a few touches and put a shot on goal, but the Moberg collected the attempt.

From the Coach
> "To play against the ninth-ranked team in the country at their place is very difficult," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "Memphis is very aggressive in the air, and giving that away is something we were trying to avoid. We lost our mark and going down 1-0 two minutes into the game is tough. We had some chances, but are having trouble recognizing opportunities and getting in the scoring groove. The biggest thing I'm proud of is how our team competed, played together and stayed positive. Their toughness was tremendous. Everyone played well and Bella Sorrentino was absolutely outstanding at centerback for us today."
