Cayet, Fernandes and Lefebvre Earn All-AAC Nods; Karani Named to All-Rookie Team
11.11.19 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Four members of the Temple men's soccer team have received post season honors by the American Athletic Conference in a vote of the league's coaches as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Senior goalkeeper Simon Lefebvre, senior forward Lukas Fernandes and junior defender Pierre Cayet each earned All-AAC second team honors, while freshman Sean Karani landed a spot on the All-Rookie team. The three selections to All-AAC honors ties for the most in program history since the formation of the American in 2013.
Lefebvre earned the honors for the first time in his two-year career after a phenomenal season between the pipes for the Owls. The 6-9 keeper has played all 1613:32 minutes in goal for the Cherry and White and has earned a goals against average of 0.95 after allowing just 17 goals in as many games this year. The Ossun, France native currently sits second in the American in shutouts (4), saves (51), save percentage (.746) and goals against average (0.95) and his 2.94 saves per game are good for third in the conference. His career goals against average of 1.10 is the fifth best in program history and he was tabbed AAC Goalkeeper of the Week on one occasion this season.
Fernandes has been a pivotal offensive spark in the Temple offense this season. The senior captain single-handedly leads the team in points (11) and assists (5) and is in a three-way tie for most goals on the team with three. The Rochester, N.Y. native has assisted a pair of game-winners against ODU and UConn and landed a spot on the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Rolls on two occasions this season. Notably this year, Fernandes notched the game-winner that lifted the Owls to a 2-1 road win over Louisville and notched a brace against Lafayette on Sept. 13. The senior captain earned the honors for the second-straight year.
Cayet has anchored Temple's brick-wall defensive unit all season while contributing greatly on set pieces to flame the Owls' offensive production. On the defensive end, the center back is a well-grounded playmaker that has made numerous defensive stops to halt some of the conference's most skillful threats this season. He captains the Temple defense that has held opponents to just 11.2 shots per game and allowed just 17 goals in as many contests this season while posting four shutouts. Offensively, the Brettes-les-Pins, France native ties for most goals on the team with three for a six-point offensive contribution. He netted the initial goal in Temple's 2-1 road win over Louisville and scored the game winner four days later in the Owls' 2-1 win against UConn, both of which were headers off of set pieces. Most recently, he scored the equalizer that sent the Owls into overtime against No. 11 SMU. Cayet was named AAC Defensive player of the week on Oct. 28 and the all-conference honors are the first of his career.
Karani earns the honors after a standout rookie season in Cherry and White. The freshman forward sits second on the squad in offensive distribution with nine points from three goals and three assists. His three goals sit in a three-way tie for most on the team and his three assists are good for second, while he's also fired off the second most shots on the team with 23. The Wichita, Ks. native notched his first collegiate point with an assist against Lafayette and his first goal was a memorable one as it was the equalizer in Temple's 2-1 double overtime win against Memphis on Oct. 12. He notched his first collegiate brace just four days later in a 3-1 win over USF and assisted Fernandes' game-winner against Louisville. Most recently, the rookie assisted the double-overtime golden goal that handed Temple its first-ever AAC tournament victory and punched their ticket to the semifinals on Wednesday. He earned Weekly Honor Roll nods by the conference on two occasions this season.
Temple will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 13 to face top-seeded UCF in the AAC Semifinals. Kickoff against the sixth-ranked Knights is set for 7:00 p.m. as the Owls look to advance to the American title game for the first time in program history.
