CINCINNATI- In front of 30,101 fans at Nippert Stadium the Temple Owls dropped a hard fought rainy conference matchup to the #19 Cincinnati Bearcats 15-13. The Owls are now 7-4 this season and 4-3 in conference play.
How it happened
First Quarter
Temple and Cincinnati went back and forth in the first quarter trading punts and penalties as spitting rain turned to snow halfway through the first quarter. The Owls had a few potential takeaway opportunities in the quarter as LB Shaun Bradley forced a fumble that was recovered by the Bearcats. In the final drive of the first quarter, Cincinnati had the most productive drive yet, getting all the way down to the Temple 18 yardline as the quarter came to a close with the score, 0-0.
Second Quarter
The Owls held strong in the red zone, and forced the Bearcats to kick a 36-yard field goal. The kick was good and Cincinnati took a 3-0 lead with 13 minutes left to play in the half.
With eight minutes left in the half, the Owls were able to force a turnover. CB Harrison Hand deflected the ball out of a Cincinnati receiver's hand and SAF Benny Walls picked it off to give the Owls the ball at Cincinnati 48 yardline. The offense couldn't get much going following the turnover, and a punt by Adam Barry pinned the Bearcats inside the 10 yardline to start their next drive.
After getting the ball back, Temple was forced to punt from inside its own 20 yardline. A low snap forced Barry to catch the ball from his knee and he would be marked down at the six yardline. The defense held strong inside the red zone again. On first down, LB Sam Franklin chased down and sacked QB Desmond Ridder on a bootleg pass that pushed Cincinnati back to the 20 yardline. The Bearcats kicked another field goal and took a 6-0 lead into halftime.
Third quarter
Cincinnati started with the ball to begin the second half. The Bearcats scored the first touchdown of the game on a 13-yard run by RB Michael Warren to make the score 13-0, Cincinnati.
On the following drive, Temple drove down the field but missed a 32-yard field goal to keep the score at 13-0 with seven minutes left in the third quarter. After neither side could gain much ground on offense, Cincinnati took a 13-0 lead into the final quarter.
Fourth quarter
Temple forced a punt to begin the fourth quarter and took over on its own 27 yardline. Blue and RB Re'Mahn Davis did the heavy lifting on the drive. Davis rushed for 14 yards and Russo connected with Blue on the next play for a 19-yard gain. On a third-and-14 play, Russo hit Davis with a short pass that he took 23-yards to convert the first down and get inside the red zone. Blue had a toe-tapping catch for 13 yards that set up a seven-yard rushing touchdown by Davis just one play later. However, the extra-point was blocked and returned by Cincinnati for a two-point score to make it 15-6 Cincinnati with 11 minutes to play in the game.
On the following drive, the defense forced Cincinnati to go three-and-out again. A crucial sack on third down by DE Quincy Roche forced the Bearcats to punt.
Temple put together another vital scoring drive following the punt. The offense took the ball 65-yards on seven plays to cut the lead. The drive was capped off by TE Kenny Yeboah catching a 16-yard fade from Russo for the touchdown. Temple cut the lead to 15-13 with seven minutes to play in the game.
On the next drive, Cincinnati took the ball all the way down to Temple's 23 yardline. Ridder took a shot to the end zone on third down that was broken up by SAF Amir Tyler to force a fourth down. Cincinnati missed the ensuing 40-yard field goal and gave Temple the ball back on its own 23 yardline with just under three minutes to play.
A comeback victory drive was cut short after a deep ball by Russo was picked off to end the game.
