Women’s Basketball Falls to Sharp Shooting FGCU

PHILADELPHIA — Mia Davis registered her fourth-straight double-double as the women's basketball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast 93-67 Sunday at McGonigle Hall. The Eagles improved to 12-2 on the year while Temple falls to 6-6.
Keys to the Game
> FGCU tied this season's single game three-point record - previously set by them - with their 19 shots from beyond the arc.
> The Eagles finished with a three-point shooting percentage of 40.4%, while the Owls shot 27.3% from long range.
> Both teams shot over 40% from the field, with FGCU holding a slight 42.7% to 41.7% edge.
> FGCU outrebounded Temple on the offensive end, 12-8, however both teams ended the game with 40 rebounds.
> The Owls committed 15 turnovers as the Eagles collected 12 steals on their way to victory.
Individual Highlights
> Davis finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth-straight double-double.
> Sophomore Marissa Mackins led the Owls with 19 points, hitting three shots from three-point range and finishing 50% from the floor (6-for-12).
> Ashley Jones added 16 points in her first game back following a two-game hiatus due to injury. Jones went 6-for-11 from the floor to shoot over 50% for the fifth time this season.
> Lena Niang was the fourth Owl to score in double-digits with 14. Niang pulled down six rebounds and collected one steal, one block and one assist to round out her stat line.
> FGCU's Davion Wingate led all players with 31 points, hitting a game-high six three's.
> Keri Jewett-Giles recorded a game-high nine assists for the Eagles.
First Quarter
> FGCU came out strong and knocked down six of their 19 three-pointers in the first quarter.
> Mackins collected seven points in the first frame to lead the Owls on offense.
> The Eagles scored eight points off turnovers and four fastbreak points to give FGCU a comfortable lead after the first 10 minutes.
Second Quarter
> Jones opened the second quarter with a three, but the Eagles answered with a 7-0 run and didn't allow an Owls' bucket for over three minutes.
> Niang and senior Shannen Atkinson both delivered one block apiece as they held down the defensive end, but FGCU was still able to register six points in the paint alongside their 15 points from three-point land.
Third Quarter
> Davis scored 11 of her 16 points after halftime to help the Owls outscore FGCU 30-29 in the third quarter.
> Niang added nine points following the break, going 3-for-3 at the foul line and 3-for-4 from the field.
> Jewett-Giles also tallied 11 points in the third frame to lead the Eagles as she hit two treys.
> Mackins made two big-time threes to spark some energy for Temple.
Fourth Quarter
> FGCU took a 30-point lead halfway through the final quarter when Wingate was fouled on a missed three and made all three attempts from the charity stripe.
> The Eagles had five players contribute points during the fourth quarter, while just three Owls grabbed a bucket towards the end of the game.
> Temple went on an 8-0 run in the final minutes of the game, but the deficit was too much for the Owls to work their way back.
