Women’s Basketball Hosts #6 South Carolina Saturday

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team returns to McGonigle Hall for the first time since early November as they welcome No. 6 South Carolina on Saturday, Dec. 7 for a 3 p.m. tip. 

THE OWLS
> Temple enters the contest with an overall record of 5-4. The Owls are coming off a victory at Towson as they returned to the win column following a two-game losing streak. 
> Mia Davis leads Temple with 20.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. The junior forward has five double-doubles this season and 22 over her career in the Cherry and White uniform. 
> Redshirt sophomore Ashley Jones adds 17.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for the Owls. On Nov. 25, Jones earned her first career American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll spot after she led Temple with 21 points in the win over Bucknell. 
> Asonah Alexander has collected both a team and conference-high 43 assists on the year. The rookie averages 4.8 assists per game in addition to 6.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest. 
> Sophomore Marissa Mackins leads the Owls beyond the arc with 18 three-pointers over nine games. Mackins registers 9.2 points per game to round out Temple's top scorers.  

LAST TIME OUT: Temple 74, Towson 59
> Temple beat the Tigers of Towson on the road in the first meeting between the two programs. 
> The Owls outshot Towson in every quarter except the second when both teams totaled 17 points. 
> Temple outrebounded the Tigers 43-35 to hold the edge on the boards. However, the Owls allowed Towson to pull down 17 offensive rebounds, the most out of any opponent this season. 
> The Tigers shot just 13.3% from three-point range (2-for-14). Temple returned to over 30% for the first time in three games as they shot 5-for-16 from beyond the arc. 
> Davis collected 15 of her points at the foul line, shooting a career-high 18 foul shots. The junior finished with an 83.3% from the line. 
> Jones added 21 points for the Owls along with six rebounds, two assists and a steal. 
> Alexander led Temple with five assists and two steals while adding eight rebounds.
> Also recording eight boards was Lena Niang, who led the Owls with two three-pointers. 
> Kionna Jeter paced the Tigers with a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds while Qierra Murray led all players with nine assists. 

SCOUTING SOUTH CAROLINA
> South Carolina is led by former Owls' head coach Dawn Staley, who boasts a 451-178 record in her 20th year of coaching. 
> The Gamecocks were ranked eighth nationally in the AP Top 25 Preseason Poll and have remained above that ranking throughout the first five weeks of games. 
> South Carolina ended the 2018-19 season with a loss in the Sweet 16 to reigning National Champion Baylor. 
> Freshman Aaliyah Boston has led the Gamecocks to a 6-1 start to the 2019-20 campaign with 14.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Boston recorded a triple-double in her first collegiate game with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks and has registered three double-doubles thus far. The rookie garnered both SEC and National Freshman of the Week honors on Dec. 3 after she averaged 15.0 points and 7.7 rebounds at the Paradise Jam Tournament in the U.S. Virgin Islands. 
> No. 17 Indiana handed SC their lone loss of the season in their first game of the Thanksgiving tournament, allowing the Hoosiers to move up three spots in this week's AP Top 25 poll and sending the Gamecocks back a spot. 
> Mikiah Herbert Harrigan, Tyasha Harris and Zia Cooke all average double-digit points for the Gamecocks. Herbert Harrigan is second on the team with 13.8 points per game, while Harris and Cooke add 11.2 and 10.3, respectively. 
> Harris has dished out a team-best 44 assists on the year to average 4.8 per game. She also leads South Carolina with 16 steals. 

LAST TIME OUT: #6 South Carolina 74, #2 Baylor 59
> The Gamecocks defeated No. 2 Baylor 74-59 to win the Paradise Jam Reef Division title in the U.S. Virgin Islands and end the reigning National Champs' 36-game win streak.
> Boston led South Carolina with 20 points and 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the year. The rookie was named the Paradise Jam Reef Division MVP following her performance on her native island of St. Thomas. 
> Baylor held a lead for the majority of the first quarter before a three-pointer by Destanni Henderson tied the game at 19 with under two minutes to go. 
> A free throw from Laeticia Amihere and a layup from Victoria Saxton in the final minute of the first quarter gave the Gamecocks a lead they would never give up. 
> Baylor spent the remainder of the game trying to claw their way back and even came within one point thanks to two good foul shots from Queen Egbo in the third frame. 
> The Bears did not score in the final three and a half minutes of the game as South Carolina went on a 10-0 run to secure the win. 

TEMPLE VS. SOUTH CAROLINA
> South Carolina holds a 4-0 record in the all-time series against Temple.
> The programs met in 2001 and 2002 and didn't meet again until 2017.
> In 2001, Temple fell in a close game to #23 South Carolina, 68-65, in Columbia, S.C. The following season, the Owls fell 57-39 to the #18 Gamecocks.
> In their first meeting in over 15 years, SC topped Temple 87-60 on Dec. 21, 2017. Exactly one year later, the Owls fell by almost the same score in South Carolina, as the Gamecocks cruised to an 88-60 win.
> Dawn Staley was the Owls' head coach in the 2001 and 2002 meetings.

LAST TIME THEY MET: #25 South Carolina 88, Temple 60
> The Owls fell to South Carolina 88-60 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C. on Dec. 21, 2018.
> The Gamecocks hit eight first half threes, but the Owls trailed by just nine at the break. 
> It was a huge third quarter that decided the game, as the hosts outscored Temple, 27-6, including a 21-1 run to put things away.
> Temple turned the ball over just eight times in the game, while forcing 15 turnovers from South Carolina, as the Gamecocks hot shooting provided the difference.
> SC shot 48.4% from long range, connecting on 15 of 31 attempts, while Temple shot just 23.8% (5-21) from three. 
> Shantay Taylor shined with career highs of 14 points and three steals, tying a career best with nine rebounds.
> Alliya Butts led the Owls with 19 points and four assists.
> Davis, hampered by foul trouble, finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
> Mackins added eight points in the loss.
