Women’s Basketball Set for Big 5 Matchup Against Villanova

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team hosts Big 5 rival Villanova Tuesday afternoon in McGonigle Hall for a 5 p.m. start.
THE OWLS
> Temple is 5-5 on the year and 0-1 in Big 5 play as they enter their second City Series game of the season.
> St. Joseph's handed the Owls their first Big 5 loss of the year on Nov. 11 with a close 67-63 game at Michael J. Hagan Arena.
> Mia Davis leads Temple with 19.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per outing. The junior forward has collected six double-doubles in 10 games to tie with six other players in the country for fourth-most double-doubles this year.
> Ashley Jones adds 17.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for the Owls. The redshirt sophomore missed the last game against South Carolina due to injury.
> Marissa Mackins is the third Owls to average double-digit points with 10.9 per contest. The sophomore poured in a career-high 26 points in the loss to South Carolina as she knocked down five three-pointers.
> Asonah Alexander leads both Temple and the American Athletic Conference with 49 assists, dishing out 4.9 per game. The rookie adds 6.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

> The Owls fell in a close contest to the No. 6 Gamecocks of South Carolina on Saturday, Dec. 7 at McGonigle Hall.
> Extended Gamecock runs at the end of the first and the beginning of the fourth proved to be the difference maker.
> Temple out-shot South Carolina by a slim margin (36.6% to 35.1%) but had 19 turnovers to South Carolina's nine.
> The Owls also out-rebounded the Gamecocks, 50-46.
> Mackins had a career night, draining five threes in a 26-point effort, adding four assists.
> Graduate student Lena Niang tallied her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

> The Wildcats are paced by redshirt-freshman Maddy Siegrist with 20.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per outing. The forward also leads the BIG EAST in points per game.
> Siegrist has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week three times so far this season. On Nov. 19, she was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Tamika Catchings Freshman Player of the Week after averaging 25.5 points over a two-game stretch.
> Mary Gedaka averages 16.6 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Wildcats. The senior was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Dec. 9 after she averaged 17.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in games against Drexel and Saint Joseph's.
> Sisters Brianna and Bridget Herlihy add 7.5 and 6.3 points, respectively, to round out Villanova's top scorers. Bridget leads both the Wildcats and the BIG EAST with 20 blocked shots.

> The Wildcats won their first Big 5 matchup of the season 60-44 at home.
> Siegrist paced Villanova with 23 points, eight rebounds, three steals, three assists and a block.

> The Wildcats have won the past two meetings over Temple as they improved to 31-14 in the all-time series.
