Men's Soccer Earns Seven Awards at Philadelphia Soccer Six Banquet

2.13.19 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Reminiscing on a successful first season under head coach Brian Rowland this past fall, the Temple University men's soccer team earned multiple honors at the Philadelphia Soccer Six awards banquet Tuesday evening. The night was highlighted by individual awards from graduated senior Hermann Doerner and freshman Jalen Campbell along with multiple All-Star and All-Rookie selections.

Doerner, who graduated from Temple this past December, was named the John McAdams Academic Player of the Year by the Philadelphia Soccer Six after his tremendous efforts both in the classroom and on the pitch. On the field, the two-year team captain started all 19 games this season as a pivotal leader in the central midfield for the Owls. In the classroom, the International Business major graduated with a 3.91 GPA, landing him a spot on the 2018 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area and CoSIDA Academic All-District teams to wrap up his impressive campaign.

Campbell was named the William "Bill" Wilkinson Freshman of the Year after a standout freshman campaign. The Brampton, Ontario native proved to be an extremely versatile player for the Owls throughout his rookie season. Seeing time in all 19 games for Temple, he finished the season tied for second on the squad with seven points, contributing two goals and three assists. He kicked off his collegiate career with an overtime game-winner against Rider on Sept. 5 and carried that momentum throughout the season, landing a spot on the All-Rookie team for both the AAC and the Philadelphia Soccer Six.

Junior Lukas Fernandes and sophomore Pierre Cayet received well-deserved recognition after their stellar seasons, both earning a spot on the 2018 Soccer Six All-Star team. During a breakout junior season, Fernandes earned the honors after leading the team in points (16), goals (6), assists (4) and game-winning goals (3). Foreshadowing his all-conference honors, he was named AAC Offensive Player of the Week on both Sept. 24 and Oct. 29 and landed a spot on the Honor Roll on Oct. 8.

Cayet was a secret weapon for Temple, spearheading the back line that posted the second most shutouts in the American (4) and kept their opponents within a one-goal margin for 18 games. He also brought a spark to the Owls' offense from his center back position, tabbing a goal in Temple's 3-1 win over NJIT and assisting the game-winning, overtime goal that led to a win over No. 25 Old Dominion. Cayet was named AAC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3 and was named team Defensive MVP after a standout first season at Temple.

Campbell picked up his second award of the night when he was named to the 2018 Philadelphia Six All-Rookie team alongside fellow freshmen Andres Charles-Barrera and Elias Hellgren Villegas. The trio earned the honors after outstanding contributions during their respective rookie seasons. Charles-Barrera started all 19 matches in the central midfield for the Cherry and White, and was crucial in controlling play on both sides of the ball. He fired off 11 shots and added one assist during his first year at Temple, earning him AAC All-Rookie honors.

Hellgren Villegas drew 16 starts from 18 matches played in a stellar rookie season at Temple. He tied Campbell for the second most points on the team (7) after scoring twice and adding three assists in multiple vital games for the Owls. He assisted Temple's critical game-winning goal against nationally recognized UCF and had a career-high three-point-game against Pitt that earned him a spot on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll. He notched another goal against No. 20 UConn and assisted the game-winner against Tulsa on senior night that secured Temple's spot in the conference tournament.
