Shizz Alston, Jr. Named AAC and Big 5 Men's Basketball Player of the Week

2.18.19 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - For the third time this season, Shizz Alston, Jr.,  has been named the American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week. In addition, Alston has been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week for a second time in 2018-19, sharing this week's honor with Penn's AJ Brodeur. Alston, the AAC's second-leading scorer, led the Owls (19-7) to a pair of wins last week.

Alston averaged 26.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists in Temple's 2-0 week. He led the Owls to a home victory over SMU and an overtime win at USF. Against the Mustangs the senior scored 13 straight Temple points, 15 of 18, and assisted on the lone basket not scored by him, in a stretch run to keep SMU at bay.

Against the Bulls, he scored eight points in the OT period and came up with a clutch three-pointer for a 68-65 advantage. He hit two free throws in the final 45 seconds to seal the road win. Alston's seven rebounds at USF were a season high. His 37-game streak with one made three-pointer is tied for third nationally.

For the season, Alston ranks second in the AAC with 18.7 points per game, third with 5.0 assists per game, first with a free throw percentage of .893, sixth with 1.7 steals per game, third with 3.0 three-pointers made per game, fifth with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.2 and first with 37.1 minutes played per game.

Temple is off until Saturday, Feb. 23 when the Owls host Tulsa at noon (ESPNews / 1210 AM WPHT).
