Owls Await Greatness at AAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

2.19.19 | Women's Track and Field

PHILADELPHIA – After a thrilling regular season fueled by massive personal bests, dedicated weeks of training and multiple broken records, the Temple University track and field squad is headed to Birmingham, Ala. to give it their all at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The two-day meet will run from Friday to Saturday, Feb. 22-23, on the 200m banked track at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Owls will look to showcase their talent as they compete against the conference's top performers, looking to leave their mark during the final meet of the indoor season and bring the hardware back to North Philadelphia.

About the AAC Championships
> The AAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex for the fourth consecutive year. The CrossPlex is home to a unique 200m hydraulically banked track designed by Mondo, one of only seven in the United States.
> The meet will feature all 12 teams of the American for the conference's sixth-ever title meet. The action will be streamed live on the American Digital Network here, and live stats will be available here.

> The championship action will begin for Temple with two strong competitors in the mile at 12:25 p.m. Millie Howard will look to defend her 2018 mile title, and Helene Gottlieb will look to build off of a big PR in the event two weekends ago.
> At 12:55 p.m., Marissa White, Madison Beecher and Mallorie Smith will compete in the 400m dash prelims. The sprinter trio looks to build off of momentum after each running their fastest times of the season two weekends ago. Following, Sydney Williams will represent Temple in the 60m hurdle trials at 1:35 p.m.
> Jamie Drayton, Kayla Nesbitt-McEwen and Candus Burks will represent the Owls in the field on day one, looking to make their marks in the long jump starting at 2 p.m.
> Four Owls will race in the 800m run prelims at 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Gottlieb and Howard will return to the track for their second races of the day, and will be joined by the consistent 800m duo of Ashton Dunkley and McKenzie Gelvin.

> The distance crew of Kira Von Ehren, Michelle Joyce and Katie Leisher will debut at 4:15 p.m. to race in the seeded section of the 5,000m run.
> To conclude the first day of conference action,  the distance medley relay will look to reset the school record for the second time this season while on the hunt for its first ever AAC title in the event.

Saturday
> Day two of the conference championships will begin with Aisha Brown and Nesbitt-McEwen representing Temple in the high jump at 9:45 a.m. Later in the field, Burks is set to compete in the triple jump beginning at 11 a.m. sharp.
> Von Ehren, Lucy Jones, Joyce and Leisher will compete in the 3,000m run at 1:40 p.m. as the Owls look to build off of a stellar showing in the event two weekends ago.
> The remainder of Saturday's action will be dictated by the results of Friday's competition, with the exception of the 4x400m relay set for 2:40 p.m.

Last Time Out
> The Owls are coming off of their most complete meet of the year two weeks ago at the Valentine Invitational. The squad took a trip up to Boston, Mass. for a meet that was highlighted by a school record from Howard and multiple personal bests against a slew of high-caliber competitors.
> For the fifth time this season, White reset her best 400m time in a Cherry and White uniform. This time, she not only reset her Temple best, but her all-time personal record as well. Running her fastest 400m ever in 55.64, White finished 14th in the 172-person field. Smith and Beecher also clocked their fastest times of the season in the event, finishing in 57.44 and 57.80, respectively.
> The sprint crew continued to shine in the 200m with three more season-best times. White showed up once again in the event, setting her second personal record of the day and running the fastest time for Temple this season in 25.05. Beecher trailed her teammate by just seven hundredths of a second, running her fastest time of the year in 25.12. Next for the Owls came Williams, who shaved nearly half a second off of her season-best to finish in 25.57.
> The Owls were nothing short of spectacular in the 1000m run. Howard came to battle in the event, shattering her own school record by over five seconds to resent the mark to 2:46.74 and finish eighth overall. Dunkley also had a great performance, shaving over seven seconds off of her personal record to post an impressive 2:55.12. Gelvin also showed significant improvement, resetting her best time to 2:56.64.
> Temple stepped up in the mile, putting multiple fast times in the books for the day. Leading the Owls was Gottlieb, who shattered her previous personal record by over six seconds with a time of 4:48.90. Next for Temple was Von Ehren, who shaved almost two seconds off her best time at 4:55.09.
> In the field, Drayton competed for the first time in Cherry and White. The freshman won her flight and finished tenth overall in the long jump after hitting the mark of 5.45m, the best jump of an Owl this season.
> The Owls put together their fastest race of the year in the 4x400m relay. Almost three seconds faster than the previous season-best time, the squad of White (56.29), Brown (56.71), Smith (55.99) and Dunkley (58.33) finished the race in 3:47.33, earning them eighth in a field of 53.
> To wrap up a stellar day of competition, the Owls saw two more personal bests in the 3000m run. Jones set a massive PR, dropping almost nine seconds and running the 3K in 9:53.67. Joyce also reset her fastest time, finishing the 3000m in 9:55.12.

On the Lookout
> Howard returns to the AAC Indoor Championships hungry to defend her mile title from 2018. Last year, she broke the meet-record and took home the gold with a time of 4:46.21. She currently ranks top-10 in the conference alongside three of her teammates, with Gottlieb and Grace Moore tied for second, Howard at sixth and Von Ehren sitting at ninth.
> After downing three-time conference champion UConn at the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge back in January, the Owls have a strong chance to earn their first-ever distance medley relay title. The DMR of Howard, White, Gottlieb and Moore ran the fastest time in Temple history and have maintained their spot at number one in the American all season.
> After setting a new PR every time she ran it this season, White has earned her rightful place in the top-10 for the 400m dash. The freshman is currently ranked ninth as she looks to continue to bring her time down this weekend.
> The Owls boast three in the top-10 in the 800m, with Gottlieb at fifth, Dunkley at sixth and Howard at ninth.
> Temple remains strong at the top of the conference in the distance events. In the 3000m, Moore ranks third overall and Von Ehren sits at sixth after strong performances at the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge. Von Ehren remains competitive in the 5K as well, entering the championship meet at seventh in the AAC.
> Brown continues to be one of the top high jumpers in the conferences, currently sitting towards the front of the top-10 at fourth.
