Women’s Tennis Travels to Howard and VCU this Weekend

PHILADELPHIA—Temple women's tennis (4-1) is set to compete against two opponents this weekend, as it will travel to Washington D.C. on Saturday, Feb. 23 to take on Howard (1-5) and to Richmond, Va. on Sunday, Feb. 24 to face VCU (6-2). Competition on Saturday is slated to begin at 12 p.m. and Sunday's match will begin at 11 a.m.
The Owls
> The team is led by head coach Steve Mauro, who is in his 11th year at the helm of the women's program.
> Last time out, the Owls defeated Fairleigh Dickinson 6-1 at the Legacy Tennis Center. Temple won the doubles point, as all three Owls pairs emerged victorious. The duo of Stefaniya Surikova and Kristina Titova are undefeated as a pair, as they improved to 4-0. The Owls carried the momentum from doubles into singles. The squad won five of the six matches and each victory came in straight sets. Chen finished up first in the number one spot, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-2. At fourth singles, Oleksandra Doroshenko also downed her opponent to give Temple the 3-0 advantage. Fairleigh Dickinson came out on top at second singles to bring the score to 3-1, but Alice Patch decided the match with a win in the sixth spot. Chunan Xiang downed her opponent at third singles and Cecilia Castelli improved to 4-0 with a win at fifth singles.
Scouting Howard
> Howard is led by Larry Strickland, who is in his 33rd year as head coach of the Bison.
> The Bison are 1-5 on the season, with their sole victory coming over Mount St. Mary's in a 4-3 contest.
