Golf Sits in 10th Place after Day One at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate

AIKEN, S.C. – Redshirt senior John Barone shot a one-over 141 on the first day at the 22nd Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate to lead Temple to 10th place among a strong field of 18 teams Monday. South Carolina shot a tournament record 23 under-par for the day to take a commanding lead at the tournament being held at the par-70, 6,617-yard Palmetto Golf Club course.
Recapping the Day
> Barone had nine birdies over the two rounds, tying for fourth in the category among the 90 golfers. His one-over has him tied for 13th overall.
> Senior Trey Wren recovered from three straight bogeys to start his second round to close with three birdies over the remaining 15 holes and finish with a two-over 72. He sits in second place for the Owls and tied for 40th with a five-over 145.
> Senior Gary McCabe and redshirt junior Erik Reisner each shot seven-over 147s for the day, tying for 51st overall. Freshman Conor McGrath had the Owls lone eagle and one of only eight on the day, a three on the par five 10th. That helped him shoot a three-over 73 for his final round.
Tournament Notes
> South Carolina has an 18 stroke lead on second place Virginia with #13 Clemson 24 shots off the pace and in third.
> The Gamecocks Will Miles leads the field with an 11-under 129. His morning round of 64 tied the course record while his combined score bested the two-round record by three strokes. He is five shots better than his teammate, Ryan Stachler, who finished the day with a six-under 134.
