Golf Finishes 7th at Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate

3.26.19 | Men's Golf

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.  – Temple's top two golfers, John Barone and Trey Wren, fought through high winds and cold weather Tuesday to lead the Owls to a seventh place finish in the 21-team Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate.   Only two of the 111-man field bested Barone's final round one-over 72, while Wren was one shot behind with a 73.

Recapping the Day
  • Barone was consistent all day, making par on 15 holes while making one birdie and two bogeys.  He finished the tournament tied for 16th with a nine-over 222.
  • Wren was equally as impressive on this miserable day with 15 pars.  He had a bogey and a double bogey, but closed his round with his lone birdie on his final hole.  His 11-over 224 tied for 24th overall.
  • Erik Reisner was one shot behind Wren after carding a six-over 77 for his final round.  He tied for 29th overall with a 12-over 225 and his 10 birdies over the three rounds tying for fifth overall.
  • Gary McCabe and Sam Soeth struggled with the conditions, posting scores of 85 and 90 respectively.  McCabe finished tied for 67th overall at 235 while Soeth ended tied for 90th at 243.
The Field
  • Campbell (863) won the tournament by 10 strokes over second place Loyola-Md (873).
  • Campbell's Max Theodorakis and Ray Kraivixien were co-medalists.  The duo were the only golfers in the field to finish under par with identical one-under 212 scores.
Quotable
  • "It was a tough day to play, 25 mile per hour winds and very cold on a really tough course.  Overall I am really disappointed.  We are not having all of the kids play well at the right time.  John (Barone) and Trey (Wren) have to manage their games better and stop trying so hard.  They need to just play and relax and they will be fine." – Temple coach Brian Quinn
