Distance Squad Wraps Up Solid Day of Competition at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. - Opening up a split weekend of competition for the Temple track and field team, six members of the distance squad traveled to Raleigh, N.C. to race at the Raleigh Relays. Sophomore Helene Gottlieb put another solid race under her belt and the 10K duo of Katie Leisher and Michelle Joyce finished the evening strong to wrap up a steady day of competition for the Owls.
 
Meet Highlights
> To get the day started, Lucy Jones competed in in the 3000m steeplechase for the second time this season. In a competitive 50-person field, the sophomore finished her signature event in 10:49.89, placing in the middle of the pack at 25th overall.
> Gottlieb had another standout performance, this time straying from the 800m and competing in the 1500m on Friday evening. The sophomore shined in the event, finishing seventh in the massive 154-person field with a time of 4:20.29 and crushing her PR by eight seconds to run the fastest time in the conference this season. Junior Millie Howard also ran well in her first 1500m of the season, finishing 38th with a time of 4:30.33.
> Junior Kira Von Ehren competed in the 5000m for the first time this season, finishing in the top half of the 145-person field with a time of 17:12.81.
> Leisher and Joyce raced a late-night 10K to wrap up a solid day of competition for the Owls. The distance duo earned a spot in the top-10, with Joyce finishing eighth with a time of 35:48.42 and Leisher finishing the 10K in 35:54.27 to place 10th.
 
From the Coach
> "Competing in a meet of this caliber brought out the best in some of our student-athletes but also showed areas where we need to improve moving forward," said assistant coach James Snyder. "Michelle and Katie did a great job working together tonight in the 10K and Helene ran fearlessly in the 1500m in a national-class field. The focus now shifts to our home meet next weekend and continuing to prepare to be the best we can be for the championship portion of our season."

> The rest of the squad will be in action tomorrow as the sprints, jumps and throws will compete at the Ole Miss Classic in Oxford, Miss.
