Women's Basketball Wins Big at Memphis to Close Regular Season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Temple women's basketball team grabbed a huge 84-53 road win at Memphis to close the regular season. The Owls finish at 7-9 in conference play (11-18 overall), tying for fifth in the final standings. Memphis ends the regular season at 6-10 in the American (10-19 overall).

Keys to the Game
> Temple shot a season-best 53.2% (33-62) from the field, while making 40% (8-20) from long range.
> The Owls got off to a hot start and led by as many as 11 in the first 20 minutes.
> Memphis got hot from three late, cutting the Temple lead to just two, 36-34 at the break.
> A huge third quarter saw the Owls outscore Memphis, 28-13, as Temple went back up by 17 after three.
> The visitors then sealed the game with a 20-6 fourth quarter advantage.

Individual Highlights
> Sophomore Mia Davis notched her 12th double-double of the season, finishing with 27 points and 14 rebounds. 
> Freshman Marissa Mackins continued her end-of-season hot shooting, as she recorded a career high of 23 points while adding three steals.
> Junior Shantay Taylor also tallied a career high in points, finishing with 16 while adding five rebounds and three blocks.
> Graduate Alliya Butts finished with 15 points, nine assists, two steals, and a career-best two blocks.
> Senior Lena Niang rounded out the box score with eight rebounds, helping Temple to a 45-31 advantage on the glass.

First Quarter
> Temple jumped out to an early 8-4 advantage, sparked by a pair of Mackins' threes.
> Memphis cut it to 8-6, before the Owls responded with a 7-0 run to lead 15-6.
> The Tigers closed the gap before the buzzer, using a 5-1 surge to make it 16-11.

Second Quarter
> Temple ran its advantage to 11 points, rattling off a 6-0 to start the frame.
> After a Memphis timeout, the Tigers got hot from three, connecting for five from long-range to cut the lead to just two points (36-34) at the break.

Third Quarter
> Temple opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run to push the lead to 47-34 with six minutes to play.
> A Memphis turnaround jumper broke the scoreless streak, but the Owls continued to roll, as Mackins scored eight straight points to make it a 57-40 game with 2:00 to play.
> Memphis hit another three in the closing minutes, but Butts answered from deep to make it 64-47 after three.

Fourth Quarter
> With the game in hand, Temple allowed just six fourth quarter points, finishing out the big win.

> Temple will enter the 2019 American Athletic Tournament as the six seed and will play #11 Memphis on Friday night at 8:00 p.m.
> The event will be held from March 8-11 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
