Lacrosse Holds off La Salle for 13-10 Road Win

3.5.19 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA (La Salle) - Juniors Maddie Gebert and Olivia Thompson scored three goals apiece to lead Temple lacrosse to a 13-10 road win at La Salle (1-4). The Owls (2-4) led 7-4 at halftime and by as many as six goals in the second half before a closing run by the Explorers got them within three.

Keys to the Game
> In a close game overall, a pair of 3-0 runs for Temple helped the Owls get the cushion they needed to stay in the lead.
> Temple had 22 shots on goal to La Salle's 17, and an overall shots lead of 32-23.
> The Owls also had 14 draw controls to the Explorers' 11, and committed seven fewer turnovers.

Individual Highlights
> The hat tricks for Gebert and Thompson were the second of the season for each of them. Thompson added an assist for a team-high four total points.
> Sophomore Jen Rodzewich had a big day with two goals, a team-leading six ground balls and a team-leading five caused turnovers.
> Junior Meghan Hoffman also scored twice for the Owls and added an assist.
> Junior Julia Ryan extended her scoring streak to four straight games with an early goal for the Owls.
> Temple was led in draw controls by junior Kara Nakrasius with five, and she also tallied three caused turnovers.

First Half
> The game was tied 2-2 after seven and a half minutes before the Owls went on a 3-0 run with goals by Rodzewich, Ryan and Thompson.
> The goal by Thompson, her second of the game, gave Temple a 5-2 lead with 12 minutes to go in the half.
> La Salle got one back before Gebert scored her second goal at 8:34 for a 6-3 lead.
> The Explorers made it 6-4 but Hoffman took advantage of a free-position opportunity with just three seconds left in the half to give the Owls a 7-4 lead at the break.

Second Half
> Thompson gave Temple a four-goal cushion when she completed her hat trick at 26:31 to put Temple up 8-4.
> La Salle scored two of the next three, broken up by the second goal for Rodzewich, and the Owls' lead was 9-6 with 25 minutes to g.
> Another 3-0 run helped seal the deal for Temple as Quinn Benintende started it off at the 20-minute mark, Gebert scored her third goal and Hoffman scored her second on a free position at 15:09 for a 12-6 lead.
> The second career goal for Gabrielle Kirsch put the Owls up 13-7 at the 12-minute mark before La Salle rattled off three straight.
> Martin came up with a big save near the three-minute mark to keep La Salle from narrowing the margin to two, and Nakrasius sealed the deal with a caused turnover at 32 seconds.

Quotable - Head Coach Bonnie Rosen
> "We're excited to come away with a win, first and foremost. La Salle is always a gritty and tough game to play. For us, digging down deep and finding a way to win was really important for our overall team feeling."

> "I thought we did a nice job early on of executing on offense and taking advantage of their man to man defense which helped set the tone for the game. Defensively, when we slowed them down in transition and put a double on the ball, our players did a really nice job of coming away with caused turnovers so that was helpful."

> "Olivia (Martin) got her first start in goal and did a really nice job today. Wynston Archer took a few more draws and that was really good. Quinn (Benintende) got on the field and scored a critical goal. We got more contributions from our bench than we've had which was great. We saw a lot of good things to build off of in this game."

> "We haven't been in a position this season where we've been up. Towards the end we let a run come at us so we still need to learn how to take a lead and keep it. We're still trying to clean up some of our unforced turnovers. But overall this was really a great team effort."
