Three Notch Hat Tricks in 16-12 Lacrosse Win at UMBC

3.9.19 | Women's Lacrosse

BALTIMORE - Three Owls recorded hat tricks in leading Temple lacrosse (3-4) to a 16-12 win at UMBC (2-4) on Saturday afternoon. Temple had the lead all game long and tallied 25 shots on goal to the Retrievers' 16.

Keys to the Game
> Junior Maddie Gebert scored the Owls' first three goals of the game to put Temple ahead 3-1, and UMBC was never able to tie.
> Ball control was a big strength for the Owls, who committed just 10 turnovers to UMBC's 19, and recorded 10 caused turnovers while UMBC had just four.
> Temple was successful on all 18 of its clear attempts in the contest.
> The Owls closed the first half on a 4-0 run for a 10-5 halftime lead, and UMBC came within no fewer than three goals the rest of the way.

Individual Highlights
> Gebert finished with a season-high four goals, while junior Meghan Hoffman also scored four goals which is her career high.
> Hoffman and sophomore Bridget Whitaker both totaled a team-best five points. Hoffman added one assist to four goals, while Whitaker added three assists to two goals.
> Senior Amber Lambeth was the third player to notch a hat trick for Temple with three goals.
> Sophomore Jen Rodzewich added one assist to two goals, also tying for the team-high in ground balls with Courtney Taylor as each recorded five.
> Freshman Wynston Archer scored her first career goal and led the Owls with six draw controls.
> The win in goal was recorded by sophomore Olivia Martin who played for 38 and a half minutes before junior Maryn Lowell came in and made three saves in 21:29.

First Half
> Gebert scored the Owls' first three goals in helping them take a 3-1 lead in the first 13 minutes.
> The first goal by Gebert was after a caused turnover by Kessina Heyn, and the second was assisted by Whitaker.
> Hoffman and Rodzewich scored less than a minute apart for a 5-2 lead at 13:45, with Rodzewich's goal coming after a Kara Nakrasius draw control.
> UMBC scored two straight to make it 5-4 and was also within one at 6-5, but the Owls then closed the half on a 4-0 run.
> Archer's first career goal started the run on a Whitaker assist at 8:20, and Rodzewich scored 18 seconds later after a Lambeth draw control.
> Lambeth then continued the run with a goal at 6:44, and Hoffman finished it with a free-position goal in the final minute for a 10-5 halftime lead.

Second Half
> UMBC scored three of the first four goals recorded in the second half to narrow the gap to 11-8, and the teams then traded two goals each.
> Still leading by just three, 13-10 at 16:54, the Owls had a run of three goals thanks to Hoffman and Whitaker.
> The 16-10 lead was more than enough as UMBC managed only two goals in the final 10 minutes.

Quotable - Head Coach Bonnie Rosen
> "Getting the win is huge. We put in a lot of work the last few days on possession skills that lead to good things, either in transition or on offense, and that gave us a lot of momentum to help us take the game."

> "We had committed a lot of unforced turnovers the last few weeks and today I finally felt like they weren't unforced as much. That goes a long way to being able to win."

> "Maddie got us off to a great start. She was confident and shooting well and handled the physical pressure very well. One adjustment we made in putting in Wynston at the center really helped us more on the draw which UMBC is really strong in. Overall it was a solid day for our team defense. Their top players still put some goals in the net but we focused on the right people and our team defense allowed us to keep things moving in the right direction."

> "We starting to do the little things well and do the first things first, which is a sign that we're starting to mature. We didn't show some of our depth off the bench today but we're continuing to build that and I'm excited to keep growing that piece going forward."
