White to Represent Bahamas at 2019 CARIFTA Games

4.19.19 | Women's Track and Field

PHILADELPHIA – Illustrating the grit and talent displayed thus far in her first season as an Owl, track and field freshman Marissa White will trade in her Cherry and White for a blue and yellow uniform this weekend, as she has been chosen to represent the Bahamas at the 2019 CARIFTA Games. The Games will run from Saturday, April 20 through Monday, April 22, and will be hosted by the Cayman Islands at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.

The 2019 Games will mark the 48th running of the prestigious event since its inauguration in 1972. The Games were initially created to promote relationships between the English-speaking countries of the Caribbean after the dissolution of the West Indies Federation, and now serve as the biggest track and field meet hosted by the Caribbean Islands each year. The Games have two age categories, under-17 and under-20, and only countries associated with CARIFTA may compete in the competition.

"It is a huge accomplishment for Marissa to be named to the Junior Bahamian CARIFTA Games team," said head coach Elvis Forde. "The CARIFTA Games are the top junior athletic championships in the Caribbean Islands every year, and having the opportunity to represent the Bahamas on the junior national team is an honor that she is extremely deserving of."

White is native to Nassau, Bahamas and has been an outstanding addition to the Temple track and field program throughout a standout freshman campaign. She was nothing short of remarkable at her inaugural AAC Indoor Championship meet, advancing to finals in the 400m where she ran a PR of 55.20 to finish fourth overall. Outdoors, she foreshadowed the season with an opening 400m time of 54.62 at the Charlotte 49ers Classic. Since then, she has won both open 400m races she has competed in and contributed greatly to the Owls' 4x400m relay team.
