Women's Basketball Takes Home Four Philadelphia Big 5 Awards

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team was well represented on the list of Philadelphia Big 5 awards released today, as four Owls took home honors after a vote of the group's coaches. Mia Davis and Alliya Butts both earned first team All-Big 5 honors, while Marissa Mackins was named Rookie of the Year, and Emani Mayo was picked as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
All-Big 5: Alliya Butts, Mia Davis
> Alliya Butts caps her collegiate career with a first team All-Big 5 honor, making her just the second four-time All-Big five honoree in program history, and the first since Marilyn Stephens (1981-1984). This season, she averaged 15.2 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game, leading the Owls in assists and steals, and ranking second on the team in scoring. Butts tallied six games with 20 or more points this season, including a career-best 34 points in a win at Tulsa. She also dished a career-best 10 assists this season, while recording 16 games with five or more helpers. Temple's all-time leader in threes (291) and steals (279), she also finished her career ranking second all-time in points (1,936) and fourth in assists (414).
> Mia Davis earns her first ever All-Big 5 selection, being named to the first team. This season, she led Temple and ranked in the top three in the American Athletic Conference, averaging 18.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Also an American first team selection, she finished in the top-10 in the conference in field goal percentage (47.6%), three point percentage (37.8%) and free throw percentage (75.2%). Davis racked up 12 double-doubles this season, and hit the 20+ mark 13 times in 28 games. She also set set a career high with 33 points in a win over Houston, tying her career-best with 17 boards in that same game.
Rookie of the Year: Marissa Mackins
> Marissa Mackins earns Big 5 Rookie of the Year honors, becoming the fourth player in Temple history to receive the award and the first since Butts in 2015. This season, she averaged 8.7 points per game, ranking third on the Owls, while adding 2.4 rebounds per game. Her totals of 70 assists and 33 steals ranked her second on the team in both categories. A two-time American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week selection this season, Mackins came on strong during crunch time, averaging 12.5 points per game over the final 10 games of the season. Against Philadelphia Big 5 opponents, the guard averaged 14.0 points per game.
Scholar-Athlete of the Year: Emani Mayo
> Emani Mayo becomes Temple's first Big 5 Scholar-Athlete of the Year honoree. A business major with the highest GPA on the Owls, she played in all 30 games this season making 25 starts. She averaged 4.7 points and 3.4 rebounds in 25.9 minutes per game, ranking third on the team with 29 total steals. Mayo notched career bests of nine rebounds, six assists and six steals during this season.
Big 5 Banquet
> The Big 5 banquet is set for Monday, April 15, starting at 6 p.m. at the Palestra. Tickets are $15 in advance and will be available at the door the night of the banquet for $20.
> Along with current season men's and women's award winners, the banquet will also honor the 2019 inductions to the Big 5 Hall of Fame, which includes three former Owls.
