Lacrosse Travels to UConn on Saturday

4.5.19 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA - Temple lacrosse will look for its first American Athletic Conference victory on Saturday, April 6 when the Owls (3-8, 0-1) travel to UConn (2-10, 0-1) for a 1 p.m. game. Both teams fell in their AAC openers last weekend.

Scouting Temple
> The Owls have lost four in a row, with two of those losses coming to teams ranked in the IWLCA Top 25. Most recently, Temple fell 15-8 to #17 Florida in the first-ever American Athletic Conference contest for both teams.
> Temple hung with the Gators in the first half, leading 4-1 early on and trailing by just one goal, 6-5 at halftime. Florida used a 9-0 second-half run to put the game out of reach.
> Despite the Owls' record, they have been strong statistically in a few areas. Temple has one more draw control this season than its opponents (130 to 129), and has recorded 30 fewer turnovers overall. The Owls' shot on goal percentage is .731 to their opponents' .712.
> Junior Maddie Gebert leads Temple with 19 goals, followed by junior Olivia Thompson with 16 goals. Junior Meghan Hoffman and sophomore Bridget Whitaker have scored 12 goals each, with Whitaker adding a team-best seven assists and a team-best 17 caused turnovers along with sophomore Courtney Taylor.
> Defender Kara Nakrasius has collected a team-best 45 draw controls and also has 12 caused turnovers.
> Both Gebert and Whitaker were named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll on March 12 after impressive showings in the Owls' two wins on March 5 and March 9. Gebert recorded hat tricks in both, scoring three goals at La Salle and a season-high four goals at UMBC. Whitaker tied for the lead in total points at UMBC, adding three assists to two goals for five points.
> Thompson exploded for a career-high six goals in the Owls' 12-10, come-from-behind win at Rutgers on Feb. 13 and was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll. Gebert also notched a hat trick in that victory with three goals.
> Overall, 15 players have scored for Temple this season and the Owls' bench has proven its depth.
> Junior Maryn Lowell made a season-best 11 saves vs. #17 Florida, and has played the most minutes in goal for Temple this season. Sophomore Olivia Martin has seen action in six games.

Temple's UConn Connections
> Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen, now in her 13th season, spent 10 years as the head coach at UConn from 1997-2006.
> Rosen was the program's first head coach, and one of her recruits was current Temple associate head coach Jennifer Wong.
> Wong was a goalkeeper for the Huskies from 2001-05, helping the Huskies to a 2005 ECAC Championships and a top-15 national ranking.

Scouting UConn
> The Huskies are 2-10 overall and have lost five of their last six games, including their AAC opener at Cincinnati, 11-9.
> Three of UConn's losses have come against Top 25 teams (Syracuse, James Madison, Dartmouth).
> Three players have scored 20 or more goals for the Huskies, led by sophomore Sydney Watson with 24 goals and 34 total points.
> Watson is also the leader in draw controls with 64, leading all players in the AAC with 5.33 draw controls per game.
> Junior goalkeeper Grace Beshlian is the conference leader in saves per game (10.20) and ranks fourth in save percentage at .462.

Series History vs. UConn
> The Huskies hold a 5-3 lead in the all-time series vs. Temple.
> UConn has won two straight, winning 16-7 in Philadelphia last year and 19-15 in Storrs in 2017.
> The teams split games in 2016, with the Owls losing 9-8 in overtime at home but defeating UConn 12-8 in the Big East Semifinals at Georgetown.
> That win was the only one for the Owls against the Huskies since 2006, as the teams did not meet again until 2014 when Temple joined the Big East.
