McCabe, Barone Lead Golf to Record Score at Princeton Invitational

4.7.19 | Men's Golf

PRINCETON, N.J. - Senior Gary McCabe had his best career finish and redshirt senior John Barone a shot four-under 67 for his final round Sunday to lead Temple Golf to third place in the 13-team Princeton Invitational.  The Owls shot a five-under 279 for their final round and the team's 54-hole total of 847 (-5) is a new program record.
Recapping the Day
  • After shooting a one-over on the front nine, Barone was masterful on the back end, firing five birdies, including his final hole, to lead the team.  His three-under 210 score was second on the team and tied for 11th overall
  • McCabe, who had his best collegiate round (68) on Saturday, had two birdies and one bogey on Sunday for a one-under 70.  His 209 is his best career 54-hole score and his finish (tie-8th) is also his finest.
  • Redshirt junior Erik Reisner, who struggled Saturday, birdied three times en route to a two-under 69.
  • Senior Trey Wren rounded out the Owl scorers Sunday, carding a two-over 73.  He finished tied for 16th with an even-par 213.
  • Freshman Conor McGrath shot a three-over 74 for the round, but his 54-hole total of 220 (+7) is his season-best.  He finished tied with Reisner and 46th overall.
  • Playing as an individual, senior Sam Soeth shot a two-over 74 and tied for 40th overall with a six-over 219.
The Field
  • Yale won the tournament by 14 strokes with a 23-under 829.  Penn was second at 843 followed by the Owls (847), who finished strong to catch Seton Hall (850) and Loyola-Md. (851).
  • Yale's Paul Stankey (-11) won the individual title by two strokes over teammate Teddy Zinser (-9).
Quotable (Temple coach Brian Quinn)
  • Overall:  "I am really proud of the kids today.  They did a great job down the stretch in the back nine.  To be honest that has been our weakest ingredient the whole year.  Yesterday was really tough the way we finished so I was really happy to see the way the kids responded today.
  • On Reisner: "Erik Reisner came out early and shot a 69 for us and I knew he was going to play well today because he has that grit."
  • On Barone: "Obviously John Barone played wonderful today.  He shot 30 on the back nine yesterday and shot 31 on the front today."
  • On McCabe: "It was Gary's best tournament as a Temple Owl golfer.  He is shaping into form at the best time. I am really proud of Gary the way he hung in there and the way he finished all three rounds.  He really got ahead and stayed ahead. I am really proud of him."
  • On Record: "That is great I guess (on record score).  The golf course today played super difficult with the pins and yesterday was very gettable for two rounds, so we did not do our best there.  Obviously it is great for the kids.  I just like seeing progress.  I saw a lot of progress today.  Even Conor who did not end up counting.  I was with him all day today and he played beautiful."
  • On upcoming schedule: "We have an event at La Salle and then we are getting ready for Conference (Championship) and when we do go to Conference that is a really good golf course for our team.  It is real tough and we have really good ball strikers so I am looking forward to that."
