Women's Rowing Races Strong in Dad Vail Opener

PHILADELPHIA — Returning to the Dad Vail Regatta for the first time since 2015, the Temple women's rowing team made a splash on day one, advancing all eights and fours grand finals.

> The Owls day two will include seven grand finals and one petite final, with Temple making the top level finals in all NCAA boats.
> Temple seeks its first Dad Vail medals since the novice eight won gold in 2015.
Varsity Eight
> Temple easily advanced out of the time trials, as their 6:40.134 placed them sixth overall.
> In the semifinals, the Owls grabbed a grand finals spot by placing second in 7:15.025.
> Temple was just .345 off the pace of first place Georgetown, and topped UMass, UC Santa Barbara, Army, and Vassar.
Second Varsity Eight
> Temple easily won its heat, clocking in at 7:36.962 in the semis to earn a grand finals spot.
> The Owls won by nearly 10 seconds over Bucknell, Jefferson, La Salle, and Marquette.
Varsity Four
> In the morning time trials, the Owls' varsity four easily made it through to the semifinals, finishing fifth in 7:30.387.
> Temple then secured a place in the grand finals with a second place semifinal finish.
> The Owls' time of 8:16.952 was behind only Lafayette and topped Fairfield, Bowdoin, Mass-Lowell, and Fordham.
Second Varsity Four
> The Owls' second varsity four left no doubt, winning their semifinal to advance to the grand finals.
> Temple's time of 8:44.341 was nearly five second better than the rest of the field, including Bucknell, two Pittsburgh boats, and UMass Lowell.
Freshman Eight
> Temple's freshman eight finished fifth in the opening time trial, clocking in at 7:02.037 to move on to semis.
> The Owls then earned a spot in the grand finals by taking second in the semifinal in 8:03.744.
> Temple was just off the pace of Grand Valley, and ahead of Villanova, Catholic, SUNY Geneseo, and Ohio State.
Pair/Double
> Temple raced a pair of two-athlete boats for the first time all season, advancing to finals in both.
> The Owls' pair of Giana Johnson and Alex Defuse took second in their semi in 9:20.770 to make the grand finals.
> Temple's double of Amanda Hulihen and Hannah Ochinegro took fifth in their semi in 10:17.892 to advance to the petite final.
Tomorrow
> Finals racing begins at 8:10 with the double in the petite final, and then continues in the afternoon, starting with Temple's pair at 1:00 p.m.
