Rowing Earns Three Medals at the 2019 AAC Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Despite weather forcing a number of changes, the Temple women's rowing team took home three medals at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships on Friday. The Owls earned a medal of each color to finish fourth overall as a team.

Medal Haul
> Temple tied its second best medal performance in history at the event, with a gold, a silver, and a bronze.
> The Owls finished no lower than fifth in any of the six races. 

Team Points
> Temple took fourth as a team, piling up 124 total points. 
> Unlike the first five years of the event, this year's Championship scored in just the NCAA boats -- the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four events.
> UCF finished first to earn the conference's NCAA bid, as the Knights totaled 180 team points. SMU finished second with 176, with Tulsa in third at 140. San Diego State followed the Owls in fifth with 100 points, with UConn (68) and Old Dominion (52) rounding out the team standings.

Varsity Eight
> After several restarts to the race, Temple's top boat used a furious sprint finish to take fourth overall in a time of 7:31.777.
> In fifth place after 1,500m, the Owls' sprint moved them up one place to match the second best finish in the event in program history.

Second Varsity Eight
> Temple's second varsity eight grabbed bronze to tie the best-ever finish for the Owls in the race.
> The crew kept its placing throughout the race, holding off a fast Tulsa boat to finish third in a time of 7:20.466.

Varsity Four
> In sixth place after the first 500m, the Owls rallied to take fifth place in a time of 8:38.108.

Second Varsity Four
> Temple's second varsity four had the program's highest finish in the event, earning a silver medal.
> Neck-in-neck with SMU for silver and bronze, Temple turned a one seat lead after 1,500m into a four second margin over Mustangs, clocking in at 8:36.991.

Third Varsity Eight
> Temple's third varsity eight earned gold, the third such in this event in program history.
> The Owls led from start to finish, recording an open water victory in a time of 7:52.813.

Third Varsity Four
> Temple's third varsity four wrapped up the conference championships with a fourth place finish.
> The Owls recorded a time of 8:49.570 to finish just one place out of the medals.

Awards
> Three Temple student-athletes were named to the All-Conference team.
> Senior Gabriela Thomas was named a first team selection and became the only Temple rower in history to earn multiple AAC All-Conference honors.
> Seniors Ciara O'Sullivan and Rachel Kelley were each named to the second team.
