A Look Inside the Nest
The Owls return a large portion of last year's squad into the 2026-27 season, while also welcoming in some individuals looking to make an immediate impact on the fall season. One notable name is transfer Sophia Hedgepeth. She comes to Temple from Purdue University where she was a standout performer on the club team. Hedgepeth has made her way into a number of lineups going into the opening event of the fall season.
Temple welcomed in eight freshmen to the team that are all eager to compete and help the Owls win each race they're in. A notable amount of these freshmen can be seen in the lineups for Sunday.
In addition to some roster additions, the Owls welcomed in two new coaches to the staff. Anne Horton joins the Owls from Smith College in Massachusetts where she spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant coach. In addition to Horton, the Owls brought in Natalie Dee as an assistant coach. Dee spent four years as a varsity rower at cross-town rival La Salle University, but now dons the Cherry and White at Temple as a coach.
The Owls competed in their inaugural season with the Mid-American Conference in the spring season. Temple along with Delaware, Eastern Michigan, High Point, Massachusetts, and Toledo met occasionally throughout the spring season but it culminated at the MAC Championships in Ypsilanti, MI. in May.
The Owls (38 points) finished third overall by the end of the day behind UMass (48 points) and Delaware (39 points). Temple finished with four of its five boats on the podium with the Varsity 8, led by returning coxswain Sofia Henningsen, finishing second. The V8 timed out at 6:40.80 for what was the highest finish by a V8 at a conference championship in program history. The 2V8, 2V4, and 3V8 each took home third place finishes on the day.
Another major highlight on the 2026 Championship season was the team's performance at the Dad Vail Regatta. The Owls took home the Women's Points Trophy which signifies the best team performance at the regatta. This marked the second points trophy under the leadership of head coach Rebecca Grzybowski. Four of the five boats in the regatta finished second place or better with the 2V8 securing gold in the grand final.
